Deep Roots Counselling and Wellness

Deep Roots Counselling and Wellness With over 15 years working in health care, I have a special understanding of the importance of balance, wellness, and self-compassion.

Deep Roots Counselling and Wellness is a safe and supportive space to dig up the old roots of life that don't provide nourishment and stability, and establish deep, strong, and helpful roots that connect and nourish I have a Master's of Arts degree in Counselling Psychology, a Bachelor of Nursing degree, a Bachelor of Science degree with a major in Biology, and a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in Religious Studies
I work with youth and adults who have mood disorders, anxiety, depression, chronic illness, those dealing with trauma and crisis, and those at the end of life. I understand the important relationship between physical and mental health and wellness, and work with the understanding that all aspects of each person (physical, mental, spiritual, social, intellectual) are important and influence who we are. I work with people where they are in life, and do my best to work from a person centered approach, understanding that the client is the expert on their life and know what is truly important to them.

Picture this, your best friend, somebody that you absolutely cherish, messes up, and is beside themselves with self blame and anger and frustration and doubt. What is your response to them? Do you sit beside them and help them beat themselves up? Most likely not.
It's wonderful to treat people with love and care, but are we treating ourselves with love and care? Think of the same scenario, but instead of your best friend, it's you who messes up. Do you tell yourself that you'll be okay, that you're loved, that mistakes don't define you? Do you tell yourself that you're terrible or worthless or useless? For most of us it's the latter.
Let's learn to treat ourselves with the same love and kindness as we do our friends. If you have trouble doing this, if this is difficult for you, you're not alone. This is something that a lot of us struggle with, and if it's a big struggle in your life, it might be time to reach out and talk to somebody about it. We have to live with ourselves for an entire lives, and we have to treat ourselves with love and care.
Happy love week

This is one of the major problems with social media. We see perfection and when we try to duplicate it, thinking, how hard can it be? My attempt at a pickle christmas tree looks like a grade 1 art class project.

To all those amazing home makers and moms and home cooks that make things look so easy, keep rocking it. I'm going to pause and rethink my life choices.

Merry Christmas eve!

Holiday Blues?

Over 5 million Canadians (or nearly 1 in 5 Canadians) live with or experience a mental health illness. Depression can affect our quality of life, our relationships, and our function at work or school.

During the holidays, depression doesn't magically disappear; in fact, it can sometimes worsen, and can lead to social withdrawal and isolation. When a lot of people are enjoying the season and getting swept up in the busyness, some people are struggling with difficult emotions and overwhelm.

If this is you, you're not alone! How do we make it through the holidays?
1. Accept your feelings and know that It's okay to feel down during the holidays.
2. Practice self-care as it is important for mental health, and it can be especially helpful during the holidays.
3. Exercise to improve your mood and help reduce the effects of stress, anxiety, and depression (if it's cold outside, bundle up!).
4. Meditating can help improve mindfulness and reduce stress.
5. Learn to say "No" as we don't have to attend every party or event. Pick one or two enjoyable things to attend instead.
6. Create new traditions if you're single or far away from home, start your own traditions or invite others into your home.
7. Set realistic expectations and don't label the holidays as a time to fix past problems.
8. Find time for yourself every day.
9. Try to limit alcohol intake.
10. Stick to your normal routine as much as you can.

I'm super excited for this Saturday. I'll be speaking at the Winnipeg Dystonia Support Group's 2024 Symposium.

I've cleaned my house and organized my work space so that I have no excuses. I even have some motivation on this chilly Wednesday!

Let's get some work done!

Is there a food you can't live without?
I've been craving pasta like crazy lately, and I love a good beefed up pasta! Today's working lunch has been brought to me by all the leftovers in my fridge and pantry, and is high protein and high fibre.
Recipe
-1/4 bag of old pasta
-Almost a cup of black lentils I found way way way at the back of the shelf
-All the non slimy spinach leaves left in the bag
-The most firm parts of 5 mini cucumbers that I forgot I had
-3/4 of 2 cans of tuna (I had to share πŸˆβ€β¬›πŸΆπŸΆ)
- FETA!!!!
-the last 6 drops of greek feta salad dressing (more would have been better)
-some splashes of olive oil
-garlic powder bc I too lazy to mince anything
-Italian spices

There are some estimates that tell us that there are over 1.5 billion people around the world who suffer from chronic pain! It's not "just" the pain that impacts the health and wellness of those with pain, it's the added exhaustion, anxiety, isolation, and sense of despair that can come with chronic pain.
There's more that we can do than just medications, and learning how to tolerate it better.

Mindful Monday

Sometimes we need to take a break from all the thoughts that are circulating (sometimes nonstop). Easier said than done, right?
Just like any other skill or practice (like yoga), mindfulness takes practice.

How do we take a thought and put it on the shelf for later? First of all, be KIND to yourself. This is a tough though/feeling, I'll put it on the shelf and come back to it when I have the capacity that I need, but right now, I need to rest (or survive my day).

Shelving thoughts is not a long term strategy for dealing with difficult thoughts or feelings, it's a coping strategy that we can utilize for the here and now, so that we can take time to rest, recover, or get through our day, and come back to it when we are ready.

For example, I have an important meeting coming up next week that I am having a hard time not focusing on and not stressing about. Do I need to stress about something that will happen next week? How is that going to help me? Right now, I want to be present, enjoy my day, and focus on what I'm working on today. I'm going to put the thoughts and feelings associated with this stressful event on the shelf (with love of course lol) and come back to it when I have dedicated time to preparing for this meeting. I may have to tell myself a few times, "I don't need to think about this now, I have other things that need my attention. This is important, but my stress level and health are more important, and I'll revisit this later."

This is where the self love/compassion/kindness comes in. Be kind to yourself and to your thoughts. ❀️

Mindfulness Monday
We tend to throw around the word "mindfulness" without giving it too much thought. It's a practice of growing calmness in our thoughts so that we can be in the moment.
I love this picture of Mind Full vs Mindful; it's a great example of being present and enjoying what you're doing in the moment. I do think though, that my dog has one more thing on his mind (always), and that's where he's going to p*e next πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ

It's FEELINGS FRIDAY!
How does that make you feel?
This is a question that I learned gives the wrong impression of who/what controls our emotions. A person or situation does not make us feel a certain emotion (well, maybe our instant reaction or instant emotion).
We can be in control of our emotions, with a little practice of course. How can we increase our emotion regulation? Self reflection and self awareness are key.
1. Meditation (this is a practice, it doesn't have to be perfect or lengthy)
2. Getting enough sleep (not always easy)
3. Listening to your body and nurturing yourself when feeling unwell (take a break when you need it)
4. Talking with friends (who listen with love)
5. Counselling (find a counsellor that you click with)
6. Journaling (not for everyone, but it is a good way to keep track of feelings and thoughts. there are also some great apps out there!- How We Feel app)
7. Paying attention to the thoughts that occur when we are feeling those strong emotions (listen to what you tell yourself, what is that inner dialogue saying?)
8. Physical exercise (move that body!)

Have a great Friday 😍
