Looking for a place to start in your fitness routine! Start with adding in more stretching! Flexibility is one of the top factors that contribute to healthy aging. It is often over looked, but extremely important. Start with picking a time of day that you have 10 minutes to stretch. Stretching might feel uncomfortable, but shouldn't be painful. You can hold your stretch anywhere from 30-90 seconds (the more the better!), if 30 seconds feels like a lot of work, start with that and build up.

Just starting out with weight training? Utilize machines! Machines will challenge your muscles, while controlling the range of motion and direction in which the resistance moves. Machines also minimize the chance of injury and allows the body/muscles to build strength and practice the movement patten of the exercise before moving to free weights.

Lower body strength! It's good to focus your training in a way that strengthens the body for ADLs (activities of daily living), walking and taking stairs are some of the first activities a sedentary lifestyle hinders. Adding in an exercise like the step up challenge the core, leg muscles and overall balance. If this exercise is new for you, start with a low step and progress from there.

Work that core! It's not about the crunches! Your core includes all the muscles in your trunk, mainly being the abdominals, obliques, lower back. Keeping these muscles strong supports total body strength and reduces chances of back injury. Overhead weighted exercises are great to include in your training to engage and strengthen the core.

Working through back pain? It can be frustrating when back pain slows down your training. The important thing to focus on is modifying exercises to keep them your back safe and your workouts effective while your back gets stronger. Using front loaded exercises can relieve pressure on the back and allow you to safely perform lower body exercises like a squat.

Today we are sharing some tips on a great lower body exercise.

THE LUNGE.

This is an intermediate to advanced version, as it is a walking lunge.

It's important to continously progress your training program to ensure your body is always challenged, which will create results. If you have been doing the same exercises for 6-8 weeks it's time to switch it up!

A simple progression is to move from stationary lunges to a walking lunges. Check out the video for details on this great exercise!

If at first you don't succeed, try again. If you continue to be unsuccessful ... hire a COACH.

My ultimate goal is to serve the needs of women finding their way to an active lifestyle. To provide them the guidance and confidence I did not have 10 years ago when I started my journey.

For some, getting and staying active comes easy. For most it is very difficult. When you replace the guess work, with a qualified expert, who understands why you are struggling it changes everything.

We actually believe SLOW progress is better than FAST progress. Slow progress allows you to introduce food and exercise changes at a pace that is manageable, and leads to lasting change in the long term.

MEAL PLANNING

Where to start?

The first step is to check and see what you have in your fridge, pantry and freezer that can be used for meals during the week. This reduces food waste and saves you money!

Next, write out the items you already have and come up with some meal ideas they can be used for. Need ideas? Check out some of the HEAL menu items below

Black Bean, Chickpea and Avocado Salad with Balsamic Dressing
https://www.healthy-eating-active-living.com/black-bean-chickpea-avocado-salad-balsamic-dressing/

Pesto Veggie Pasta Salad

Green Lentil, Arugula & Spinach Salad
https://www.healthy-eating-active-living.com/green-lentil-arugula-spinach-salad/

Then fill in the gaps of ingredients for these meals by writing them all down (your grocery list). Finally double check levels of your family staples such as coffee, milk, peanut butter etc. If anything is out/low, add it to your list.

Check the list of items you already have, and grocery list to see how many vegetables and fruit you have. If the main meals you plan to make do not include vegetables/fruit, these items may be short.

Top up your shopping list with vegetables and fruit your family enjoys, so they can be added to meals and snacks.

Lastly, shop! But stick to your list to save yourself money and time in the grocery store!

Fuel up for a GREAT workout!

- Fat Loss
- Gaining Muscle
- Improving Strength
- Increased Endurance
- Training Recovery

All need CARBS! Yes, the feared macronutrient for many years. This seems to be changing for the most part, but so often I see new clients who simply aren't eating enough carbohydrates to fuel their workouts.

So what to change? Reduce the frequency of low nutrient, simple sugars (cakes, cookies, candies etc), and increase the nutrient dense complex carbohydrates such as potatoes, rice and oats.

Want more details on what to eat before a workout? Check out this post on the JUST BEING CHI blog! https://www.healthy-eating-active-living.com/the-perfect-pre-workout-meal/
