Having a sick or injured child can be scary and overwhelming. Knowing where to go BEFORE your child becomes sick or injured can help you make the right decision when they need care.

Where you go will depend on your child’s symptoms as well as where you are located. Many common cold and flu symptoms can be safely treated at home, or with a visit to your doctor, a walk-in clinic, or urgent care centre.

Indigenous Health team members, staff, patients and families gathered outside HSC Women’s Hospital yesterday to celebrate the arrival of fall with a smudge, song and sacred fire.

The gathering began with a teaching offered by Rev. Michael “Two Suns” Thibert, Spiritual Cultural Care Provider. Fall Equinox, he shared, is a time to reflect, give thanks for the gifts from the year, and prepare for the coming darker, colder months. It’s a natural reminder of cycles, balance between light and dark, and the importance of gratitude and letting go.

“We light our sacred fire today as a way of closing a circle from last Fall Equinox to this one. There’s changes in our life that we move through in different stages and each stage comes with teachings and guidance,” Thibert said. “We honour this time to reflect on where we are in our lives. What things do we need to take and set aside as we enter into this fall season, as we see the coming down of the sun, light, and growing of darkness.”

The Gift of Life flag is flying today at HSC_Winnipeg and St. Boniface Hospital. It has been raised in tribute to a donor, someone who has offered a gift of life to others either through living or deceased organ donation. The flag serves as a signal to the community by honouring the courage, compassion and generosity of the donor and acknowledging the decision to say yes to life-saving organ donation. Thank you.

Behind every brace and every movement regained, there’s a team of skilled hands and compassionate hearts at Health Sciences Centre’s (HSC) Orthotics Department.

This specialized team is responsible for providing orthotic solutions for a wide range of mobility disorders and injury rehabilitation. This work includes custom and off-the-shelf bracing across the whole body. The Orthotics Technicians are responsible for fabricating, modifying and repairing these devices by hand.

Garth Ward and Kevin Shead are just two of the dedicated technicians who bring mobility, stability, and freedom to patients across Manitoba.

From back braces to special shoes and helmets, these devices are as unique as the Manitobans who wear them.

“Every device we make is custom designed and fit to each client,” said Ward, a Registered Orthotic Technician, who has worked in HSC’s Orthotics Department for 18 years. “That brings unique challenges to every project, and that’s part of what makes this work so rewarding.”

Our Story

More than 8,000 staff, physicians and volunteers care for patients at HSC Winnipeg. Highly-skilled interdisciplinary teams provide complex, specialist (“tertiary”) acute care, including diagnostic, outpatient and inpatient services to adults and children across Manitoba, north-western Ontario and Nunavut.

HSC is a Shared Health facility, and is Manitoba’s provincial tertiary centre for trauma, transplants, burns, neurosciences, complex cancer care and pediatric care. Every clinical hospital-based service available in the province is offered at HSC, with the exception of cardiac surgery and eye surgery. This means the majority of Manitobans’ tertiary care is provided here, regardless of which community our patients call home.

HSC is also a teaching hospital, formally affiliated with the University of Manitoba and other post-secondary institutions. Students learn from us at the bedside or in the lab, and many of our staff teach and conduct research at these institutions.
