The purpose of regulation is to protect the public by ensuring that RNs practice in a safe, competent and ethical manner. We carry out our work in a number of ways:

Setting standards for registered nursing education, registration and practice:
• We approve nursing education programs.
• We have a registration process to ensure registered nurses are qualified and competent.
• We set the standards of nursing practice that all RNs are required to meet every day.
• We set and monitor continuing competence requirements, in which RNs demonstrate their efforts to remain current in their
nursing knowledge. Supporting registered nurses in meeting the standards:
• We provide educational opportunities and resources.
• We provide practice consultation services. Taking action when the standards are not met:
• We receive and handle complaints about registered nursing practice and take appropriate action with fairness and transparency.

The College wants to thank Nadya Crossman-Serb for the captivating work she accomplished in collaboration with Synonym Art Consultation on her mural, The Path Forward. The piece guides all visitors through reception and into the public area of our new shared office, the Centre for Professional Regulatory Collaboration. It is part of our shared commitment to building relationships with First Nations, Inuit and Métis and in supporting reconciliation in professional regulation.

In Nadya’s words, here is what the mural represents:
Guided by a trail of florals inspired by traditional beadwork, the bison roams the grasslands, the trumpeter swan graces the serene lakes, the white-tailed deer navigates through the wooded areas, and the beluga whale inhabits the calm waters of Hudson Bay, showcasing the rich natural environment that nurtures both wildlife and human alike.

This mural celebrates the land, its gifts to us, and unity in the building by depicting four emblematic animals: a bison, a trumpeter swan, a white-tailed deer, and a beluga whale with its calf. Each animal represents qualities that resonate with the values and mandates of healthcare regulators.

The bison symbolizes strength and resilience, mirroring the endurance required in all healthcare professions. The trumpeter swan embodies grace and caring, reflecting the compassionate nature embodied by healthcare providers along with the qualities of gentleness and empathy, personified by the white-tailed deer.

Lastly, the beluga whale and its baby calf symbolize nurturing and communication, essential attributes in all health professions as people work with one another to foster understanding and healing. Together, these animals remind us of the interconnectedness of healthcare disciplines, highlighting the shared commitment to nurturing life, promoting health, and creating a supportive community for all.
