In Japan, karoshi—literally “death from overwork”—is more than a word. It’s a warning. Despite reforms like the 2018 Workstyle Reform Act, cases persist. Lawyer Hiroshi Kawahito has handled over 1,000 karoshi cases, many involving heart attacks, strokes, or su***de caused by relentless stress and harassment.

One heartbreaking example: a 25-year-old actress from the Takarazuka R***e logged 437 hours in a single month, including 277 hours of overtime, before dying by su***de. She hadn’t had a single day off in six weeks.

But this isn’t just Japan’s crisis.
