Swimming has been proven to be one of the best forms of exercise; however, statistics show that 66% of competitive swimmers will have a shoulder injury in their lifetime.

Did you know the average avid swimmer completes well over a million shoulder rotations per arm within a given year? Improper technique is the leading cause of injury.

PROTECT THOSE SHOULDERS!!!

Book a consult with strength and conditioning specialist, Dr. Michael Mancini, DC, Cert.MDT, CAFS, PES

Building strength in the following areas will help protect against undue strain and overuse:

The muscles that attach to and control the dynamic movement of the shoulder blade.
The most common muscles to be strengthened for swimmers are the serratus anterior, subscapularis, lower trapezius and external rotators.
As with all other sports, stretching is useful when appropriate on a limited basis. Too much or unnecessary stretching can exacerbate sports imjuries, particularly shoulder problems.

The most common areas of tightness in swimmers is the posterior capsule of the shoulder and the pectoral muscles.

Finally, the core or trunk includes muscles of the back, abdominals and hips. Strength here can avoid muscular imbalances, weakness and repetitive strain elsewhere.

Many patients seek treatment after losing flexibility or function following an injury or if experiencing pain as a result of a chronic condition such as low back, shoulder or hip regional pain.

The goal of therapy is to stretch and loosen the fascia so that it and other contiguous structures can move more freely, thereby restoring functional mobility to help you maintain an active, healthy lifestyle.

Do your legs or ankles swell? Do you have Varicose Veins?
The blood circulatory and lymphatic systems in the human body maintain a delicate balance. If the venous system is damaged, it usually affects the lymphatic vessel system.

It is not unusual for legs to be swollen in the evening. The volume of the lower leg can increase by up to 100ml after a long working day or up to 200ml after a long-haul flight without moving.

Edema that does not disappear spontaneously within a few hours or after a walk is categorized as pathological. Bilateral and marked edema with few symptoms is mostly caused by systemic circulatory dysfunction (heart, kidneys, liver).

Venous edema is virtually always associated with symptoms and/or clinical signs such as dilated superficial veins, varicose veins and skin changes.

Information and management of Secondary Lymphedema.
Secondary lymphedema is caused by removal of, or damage to, lymph nodes and related lymphatic structures. This may result in a permanent blockage of fluid from the affected region of the body.

Secondary lymphedema can develop as a result of surgery, radiation, trauma, infection, inflammation or venous insufficiency.

Information and management of Primary Lymphedema.
Primary lymphedema is caused from a developmental disorder of the lymphatic system. Swelling can be present at birth or may not occur until later years.
What are the symptoms?
As a result of swelling, the affected limb might feel tight and heavy, and there may be pain due to associated nerve injuries, obstruction of veins, and strain on ligaments from the increased limb weight.

Before and after combined decongestive therapy treatments.
