We did it—together.

Thanks to the incredible generosity of our community, the annual Innovation HSC campaign has officially surpassed its goal—raising an extraordinary $4,220,226, more than 145% of our original target, to advance health care innovation at HSC_Winnipeg.

Since 2019, thousands of donors have come together to contribute over $21 million to Innovation HSC—fuelling new technology, advancing research, and transforming the way care is delivered for Manitobans.

These donations help ensure that HSC can continue to invest in leading-edge equipment, improve spaces and systems to reduce wait times, and support the people and ideas driving better outcomes for patients every day.

Innovation never stands still—and thanks to you, neither does health care in Manitoba.

From all of us, thank you for making this possible.

She may not wear a superhero’s cape, but Lori Derksen has spent her life helping others—quietly, generously, and with purpose.

Raised on a small farm in Manitoba and inspired by her mother’s deep commitment to service, Lori has carried those values with her throughout her life and career in the not-for-profit sector. Today, she’s ensuring that spirit of giving continues far into the future through thoughtful legacy gifts—including support for spine and back care at HSC_Winnipeg, a cause close to her heart.

“I’m certainly not a wealthy woman… but I want to communicate that you don’t have to be wealthy or make a huge gift to make a difference. Every penny counts.”

Lori’s story is a powerful reminder that generosity isn’t defined by size—it’s defined by impact.

It’s not often you can describe persistent headaches as “lucky,” but that’s exactly how Petrusia (Tusia) Kozub feels about what she experienced in 2017.

What began as a precautionary MRI led to the unexpected discovery of a brain tumour. Years later, thanks to the precision of Gamma Knife technology—and the care of Dr. Jason Beiko and the incredible nursing team—Tusia underwent a non-invasive procedure at HSC_Winnipeg that allowed her to return home the very same day.

Discover Tusia’s story—and the impact donor support is having on patient care at HSC: https://www.hscfoundation.mb.ca/stories/minimally-invasive-brain-procedure-hits-the-right-notes/

Winnipeg, you popped in and made a difference at Just Like New To You’s pop-up purse sale! A heartfelt thank you to Just Like New To You for hosting this fun and fashionable event—and to everyone who came out to support it.

“The pop-up sale was a great success, and it was wonderful to see so many people who work Monday to Friday have the chance to stop by and visit our little shop,” says Susan Lockhart, President of Just Like New To You. “We raised over $3,000 in just a few hours, which was incredible. We’re planning another pop-up sale on Saturday, May 2 in honour of Mother’s Day and our 21st anniversary. Many high-end purses and other new items are still available and will be on sale.”

From stunning designer handbags to a shop full of excited customers, the day was a true celebration of community and generosity. Because of efforts like these, meaningful support continues to flow directly to patient care at HSC_Winnipeg—making a real difference for Manitobans.

• A patient who heard the words “you HAD cancer" in the past tense, thanks to Manitoba’s first surgical robot
• A mother of three who went from debilitating back pain to walking out of HSC_Winnipeg the same day as her minimally invasive spine surgery

These stories—and more—show how your support is helping patients receive faster diagnoses, less invasive treatments, and life-changing care close to home.

Much of Tom Trottier’s life has been shaped by seizures—not just the acute episodes themselves, but the physical and emotional exhaustion that follows. In recent years, Tom, 51, had been experiencing up to 10 seizures a month. For Tom and his parents, Pat and Phil, it’s been stressful and unforgiving.

But life for the Trottiers seems to be turning a corner, thanks to deep brain stimulation (DBS) implant surgery performed on February 6. The surgery, Manitoba’s first-ever DBS procedure for a patient living with epilepsy, was performed by neurosurgeon, Dr. Anton Fomenko.

“Tom is pretty proud that he had the DBS procedure. He tells people he had brain surgery and shows off the scars. He wears them like a badge of honour," says Pat.

Today is Purple Day, an international grassroots effort dedicated to increasing awareness about epilepsy worldwide. By sharing stories like Tom’s, we hope to shine a light on the realities of living with epilepsy—and the life-changing impact of innovative care. Shorter hospital stays. Better patient outcomes. And real savings for Manitoba’s health care system.

In its first year at HSC_Winnipeg, the da Vinci Xi surgical robot saved 330 hospital bed days and generated $1.13 million in system savings.

First deployed in September 2024 as a centrepiece of the HSC Foundation’s Operation Excellence campaign, the robot allows surgeons to operate with extraordinary precision using tiny incisions and advanced visualization.

For patients, that means less pain, lower risk of infection, fewer complications, and a much faster recovery.

Innovation like this is transforming care at Manitoba’s hospital. Learn more and be a part of the difference at https://www.operationexcellence.ca/

Savour Mexico: Wine & Food Experience, presented by Garcea Group of Companies, took place one month ago—and the generosity of that evening is already set to make a GIANT impact at HSC_Winnipeg.

Thanks to the generosity of our guests, partners, and supporters, the evening raised more than $1.8 million, making it the most successful Savour event to date.

Nearly $980,000 of that total came from this year’s Fund-A-Need campaign and auction, which focused on raising funds for vital upgrades for minimally invasive spine and joint replacement surgery, including an additional Stryker Q Guidance System and a new anesthesia machine.

This advanced technology allows surgeons to perform procedures with greater precision and efficiency, allowing our hospital to perform up to 200 additional spine surgeries and 400 more joint replacements every year—reducing wait times and improving outcomes for patients across Manitoba.

Even more exciting, the new spine surgery equipment has already been ordered and will be in place April 1, helping reduce our spinal surgery wait list and improve care for patients from across Manitoba!

Your generosity is making a real difference at HSC_Winnipeg—for the patients who come through our doors and the teams who care for them every day.

On this , we’re proud to share a note from Dr. Richard Liu, one of the thoracic surgeons at the donor-funded, state-of-the-art Wilf Taillieu Thoracic Surgery Clinic and Endoscopy Unit:

“I started here just as the unit opened and over my career, all of our thoracic surgeons have been so fortunate to have such an incredible level of support from the foundation. It’s created an environment that has attracted a world class team and allowed for innovation. It is an environment where it is now easy to provide compassionate patient-centred care. We are all so grateful for that.”

Because of donors like you, Manitoba’s hospital can continue to attract top talent, support innovation, and create spaces where exceptional care is possible.

Thank you for being part of this incredible community.
