Beyond the Water Bottle: Staying Safe in the Winnipeg Heat ☀️💧

Winnipeg, it is SCORCHING today! 🔥 With temperatures hitting record highs this May 29th, we’re all feeling the heat. While everyone knows they should drink water, did you know that during a heatwave, water is only half the story?

At Fair Havens Pharmacy, we want to make sure you’re staying «smart-hydrated.» Here is what you need to know:

🔋 Why Water Isn’t Enough:
When we sweat, we don’t just lose water; we lose essential minerals like sodium, potassium, and magnesium (electrolytes). If you drink massive amounts of plain water without replacing these, you can actually feel more tired, dizzy, or even get muscle cramps.

⚠️ Warning Signs of Heat Exhaustion:
If you’ve been out in the sun at Assiniboine Park or working in your garden on Corydon, watch for:
• Extreme thirst or dry mouth
• Dizziness or «brain fog»
• Headaches
• Dark-colored urine
• Feeling unusually irritable or tired

🛡️ Your Heatwave Survival Kit:
1. Electrolytes: Consider adding an oral rehydration solution (like Hydralyte or BioSteel) to your water. It helps your body actually absorb the fluid rather than just flushing it out.
2. Cooling Meds: Be careful! Some medications (like those for blood pressure or allergies) can actually make you more prone to dehydration. Ask our pharmacist if yours are on the list.
3. The «Pee Test»: Your goal is pale yellow. If it’s dark, you’re already behind on your hydration!

How we can help:
Stop by Fair Havens Pharmacy to cool off and pick up professional-grade electrolyte replacements that are much more effective (and lower in sugar) than typical sports drinks.

Stay cool and stay safe, Winnipeg! 🍦🏙️

Is Your Medication Making You Sun-Sensitive? ☀️💊

As the Winnipeg sun finally starts to shine, we’re all rushing outdoors! But before you head to the patio or the lake this weekend, your team at Fair Havens Pharmacy has an important safety reminder: Some medications and the sun do not mix.

🧬 What is Photosensitivity?
Certain medications can cause a chemical reaction in your skin when exposed to UV rays. This can lead to a “sun poisoning” effect—painful rashes, blisters, or a severe sunburn in just a few minutes, even if you usually don’t burn easily!

⚠️ Common Culprits Include:
• Antibiotics (like Tetracyclines or Sulfonamides)
• Blood Pressure Meds (certain diuretics like Hydrochlorothiazide)
• Acne Treatments (Retinoids and Isotretinoin)
• NSAIDs (like Ibuprofen or Naproxen)
• Some Antidepressants & St. John’s Wort

🛡️ How to Protect Yourself:
1. Check Your Label: Look for a “Warning” sticker on your prescription bottle regarding sun exposure.
2. Ask Your Pharmacist: Not sure if your daily meds are on the list? Just ask us! We can review your profile in seconds.
3. The “Big Three”: If you are on these meds, double down on High-SPF Sunscreen, Wide-Brimmed Hats, and seeking Shade during peak hours (11 AM – 3 PM).

Don’t let a hidden side effect ruin your spring! Stop by our shop on Corydon Ave for a quick consultation before you pack your beach bag. 🏖️🏛️

Sun Safety: It’s Not Just for Summer! ☀️🧴

It’s April 30th, and with May just around the corner, patio season in Winnipeg is officially beginning! While we all love that first bit of spring warmth, your team at Fair Havens Pharmacy wants to remind you that your skin might not be ready for the UV rays just yet.

Why start protection in May?
After a long Manitoba winter, our skin has very little natural melanin protection. Even if it’s not “hot” outside, the UV index can still be high enough to cause damage and increase the risk of skin cancer.

🛡️ Your Spring Skin Guide:
• The “Expiry Check”: Sunscreen doesn’t last forever! Check your bottles from last year - if they are expired, the protective filters may have broken down.
• Medication Alert: ⚠️ Did you know some common medications (like certain antibiotics, blood pressure meds, or acne treatments) can make your skin extra sensitive to the sun? You might burn much faster than usual.
• The ABCDEs of Moles: May is the perfect time to do a skin check. Look for spots that are Asymmetrical, have irregular Borders, uneven Colors, a large Diameter, or are Evolving/changing.

How Fair Havens Pharmacy can help:
• Personalized Sunscreen Advice: We can help you choose the right SPF for your skin type (especially if you have sensitive skin or eczema).
• Medication Reviews: Ask our pharmacist if any of your current prescriptions increase your sun sensitivity. 💊
• After-Sun Care: If you did get a bit too much sun this weekend, we have the right medical-grade gels to help you heal.

Enjoy the sunshine on Corydon safely! Stop by and see us if you have any questions about protecting your family’s skin this spring. 🌷🏛️

Spring is here, but so are the Ticks! 🌳🕷️

It’s April 24th, and as the ground warms up in Winnipeg, we aren’t the only ones heading outside - ticks are waking up too! In Manitoba, ticks become active as soon as the temperature reaches 4°C or higher.

Before you head out for a walk in the park or start your garden cleanup, here is your Fair Havens Pharmacy Guide to staying tick-safe this spring:

🛡️ Prevention is the Best Medicine:
• Dress for Success: Wear light-colored clothing (it makes ticks easier to spot!) and tuck your pants into your socks if you’re in tall grass.
• Use Repellent: Look for products containing DEET or Icaridin. Not sure which one is right for your family or kids? Ask us! We can help you find the most effective and safe option.
• The “Tick Check”: After being outdoors, always do a full body check on yourself, your kids, and your pets.

🩺 What if you find a tick?
• Don’t Panic: Use fine-tipped tweezers to grasp the tick as close to the skin as possible and pull upward with steady pressure.
• Watch the Spot: Keep an eye on the bite area for the next 30 days. If you see a “bullseye” rash or start feeling flu-like symptoms (fever, aches, fatigue), contact a healthcare provider immediately.

How we can help:
Stop by Fair Havens Pharmacy on Corydon! We can recommend the best insect repellents, and answer any questions about Lyme disease risks in our area.

Enjoy the sunshine safely, Winnipeg! ☀️🌷

⚠️ Why do we feel “off” during weather shifts?
When the temperature swings 10 or 20 degrees in 48 hours, your body has to work overtime to adapt. This can lead to:

1️⃣ Blood Pressure Fluctuations: 🩺
Cold weather causes blood vessels to constrict (narrow), which can raise blood pressure. When it suddenly warms up, they dilate (widen). These shifts can cause headaches, dizziness, or even heart palpitations for some.

2️⃣ Dehydration is Still Real: 💧
We often forget to drink water when it’s snowing, but indoor heating and fluctuating temps can dehydrate you quickly. Dehydration makes those “weather headaches” and fatigue even worse!

3️⃣ Joint Pain & Migraines: 🧠
Changes in barometric pressure (which happen right before the snow or sun returns) can cause tissues to expand and contract, triggering joint stiffness and migraines.

🛡️ Your “Weather Shift” Survival Guide:
• Monitor your BP: If you have high blood pressure, stay consistent with your meds during these swings.
• Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate: Drink water even if you aren’t “thirsty.”
• Layer up: Protect your body from the shock of the cold to keep your circulation steady.

How Fair Havens Pharmacy can help:
Feel free to stop by our shop on Corydon! We can help you check your blood pressure, recommend the right electrolytes for hydration, or suggest gentle support for those weather-related headaches.

Stay warm today, Winnipeg - the sun is coming back soon! 🌷💊

🧠 What is Bipolar Disorder?
It is a mental health condition that causes extreme mood swings. These aren’t just “good and bad days” - they are significant shifts in energy and activity levels.

2. Psychotherapy: To help manage triggers and stress.
3. Lifestyle: Consistent sleep patterns and routine are vital.
