In 2007, Berwick Nova Scotia, after a new student at their school was bullied for wearing a pink shirt, two grade 12 students bought 50 pink shirts and encouraged their classmates to wear pink. The next day they went to distribute the shirts and to their surprise the majority of students arrived wearing pink! With that act of kindness, Pink Shirt Day was born.

In recognition of the Berwick event, Nova Scotia proclaimed the second Thursday of September “Stand Up Against Bullying Day.” In 2008, British Columbia proclaimed February 27th to be the provincial anti-bullying day, and the movement has continued to grow. In 2012, the United Nations declared May 4 as Anti-Bullying Day, and now the last Wednesday each February is Canada’s national Pink Shirt/anti-bullying day.

Many countries now recognize specific days for raising awareness about the prevention of bullying and promoting kindness and inclusion. In Canada, many students have heard the Pink Shirt Day message from kindergarten through to their high school graduation. The movement continues to grow.

When deciding on the best type of vision correction for your teen, you have options to consider. In most cases, glasses would be the first choice, and these would be worn according to the recommendation of the eye care professional that prescribed them.

However, does your teen find that wearing their glasses during sports or dance is an inconvenience? Are your teen’s glasses always, dirty, crooked and broken? Is it a nuisance when their glasses steam up when they come into the house from the cold weather? Does your teen want to wear sunglasses in the summer months or perhaps goggles for winter sports? If your teen has trouble adapting to their new world with glasses, you may start to consider contact lenses. It has been shown that teens report better vision-related quality of life when wearing contact lenses compared to glasses.

FICTION: The Canadian Association of Optometrists recommends that babies have their first eye examination between six and nine months of age. This is an important time to ensure eyes are healthy, eye and muscle movements and alignment are developing properly, and the eyes are focusing together. An accurate and complete eye exam can be performed without the need to read the eye chart; an optometrist will test for nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, eye movement, and eye health.

There are a few ways to make this first visit more enjoyable:

Work around fussy times.
Schedule the appointment at a time when baby is generally relaxed and happy
Ask to have any required paperwork sent to you before the appointment so that it can be completed at home and brought to the appointment.
A number of serious eye conditions exist that can be identified during the first eye exam. If left uncorrected, these conditions can result in serious vision problems. However, with early detection and treatment, many vision problems are reversible and in some cases preventable.
