It’s Mental Illness Awareness Week, an opportunity to talk openly about the realities of mental illness and reduce the stigma around this important topic.

Mental Health Mythbusters – The Mental Health Commission of Canada Commission de la santé mentale du Canada sets out some common myths around mental illness:

➡️ MYTH: Mental illness is a lifelong diagnosis.
➡️ FACT: Mental illness is treatable. It is possible to recover and even thrive following a mental illness. Check out eight mental illness myths here: https://ow.ly/iSV950PU4hv

➡️ MYTH: Some people are immune to mental illness.
➡️ FACT: The Mental Health Commission notes that while no one is immune there are risk and protective factors that can play a big role.

➡️ MYTH: Mental health is the same as mental illness.
➡️ FACT: While they are intertwined, the Mental Health Commission notes that mental health and mental illness are distinctly different.

Today is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, in recognition of the history and ongoing legacy of residential schools in Canada. On this day, we set aside time to recognize and honour the Indigenous victims and survivors of the residential school legacy – and to honour the Indigenous children and families affected by the history of residential schools.

We each have a role to play in truth and reconciliation. It is up to each of us to commit to listening, to unlearning harmful behaviours, misconceptions, and biases and to incorporating values of respect, compassion, and equity into our daily practices and work.
