Rituals help us honour what’s been lost — and hold space for what still matters.
That might look like lighting a candle, planting something, sharing a memory, playing a song, or writing a letter. It doesn’t need to be grand to be meaningful.

One moment you’re okay. The next, you're crying in the grocery store because of a song or a smell. That’s not a setback — it’s part of the process.

Grief is not a single emotion. It’s a full-body experience. It may show up as sadness, irritability, numbness, or even laughter. All of it is valid.

🌿 Today’s tip for navigating a wave:
Breathe deeply and ground yourself (press your feet into the floor).
Name what you’re feeling without judgment.
Give yourself a pause — even if it’s just 60 seconds.

You are riding something powerful. Let the wave rise and fall. It won’t last forever.

Grief doesn’t come with a stopwatch. There’s no deadline for “feeling better,” and no linear path to follow. Sometimes it hits like a wave when you least expect it — and that’s okay.

Whether you’re grieving a person, a pet, a relationship, or a version of life we thought we’d have, or a shift in your life, your experience matters. There’s no “right” way to grieve. There’s only your way.

Loneliness in Grief: When Loss Feels Like Silence

Grief has a way of pulling people inward. Even when we're surrounded by others, the world can feel quiet — like a part of it has gone missing. And in that silence, loneliness often moves in.
This kind of loneliness isn’t always about being physically alone. It’s the emotional experience of being unseen, of not knowing how to share what you’re carrying — or of feeling like others have moved on while you’re still trying to breathe through the ache.

You’re not alone in feeling alone. Allow someone to witness your grief — not fix it, but simply be with it.

You Don’t Have to Carry It Alone

One of the most healing things we can do in grief is let someone witness it. You don’t need to explain it perfectly or be “strong.” You just need space where you don’t have to hide how much it hurts.

That might look like:
- Talking to a trusted friend or therapist
- Sharing a memory of your person or pet with someone who will listen
- Attending a support group or grief-informed workshop
- Journaling your experience so your feelings have somewhere to land

If you’re not ready to talk, that’s okay too. Even small acts of connection — sitting with someone in silence, receiving a text that says “thinking of you,” or hearing someone say, “You don’t have to be okay today” — can help soften the edges of loneliness.

If you're feeling lonely in your grief right now, know this: You’re not alone in feeling alone. There are others who understand, who have felt that ache, and who can hold space for it with you.

💙 A Night to Remember 💙
Winnipeg Jets Playoff Game |

The energy of the Winnipeg White Out was electric — but for me, the true highlight was sharing the moment with my husband and parents.

Growing up, my parents took us to countless Jets games — including the emotional “Last Flight” before the team left Winnipeg. Being back at a playoff game with them — their first time since the team’s return — brought back so many memories of joy, connection, and togetherness.

🏒 In our family, hockey was never just a game — it was connection. It was watching Hockey Night in Canada, playing video games, ball hockey on the street, and cheering in the stands. It wove us together — and still does.

As an EMDR therapist, I’m always thinking about adaptive memory networks — the places in the brain where we store experiences of support, safety, connection, belonging, and positive meaning. This night lit up that network for me.

👉 When working with trauma, therapists often help clients strengthen these adaptive networks — building and reinforcing the experiences that help anchor them during tough times.

Whether it’s a meaningful night with loved ones or a quiet moment of calm, these experiences matter. They become the inner resources we draw on during healing.

Honouring George – A Legacy of Compassion and Connection

At Peace of Mind Therapy, we are deeply saddened by the passing of George Leonard, founder of MSAR Service Dogs and Courageous Companions — a man whose heart, instincts, and unwavering dedication made a lasting impact on our team and the clients we serve.

Over the years, George placed several of our beloved service facility dogs with us. Each placement was done with incredible care, and it was clear that he didn’t just match dogs with people — he matched hearts. George understood that healing is not linear, and he believed in the power of connection, presence, and unconditional support.

Kelly had the honour of working with George many times over the years and was always struck by how deeply he cared — not just about the dogs, but about the people they were meant to help. He had a gift for seeing potential in those that others might overlook, and he was fiercely committed to making life a little better for those who needed it most.

His legacy lives on in every tail wag that brightens a therapy room or home, in the calm that settles over a person when a dog quietly leans in, and in the lives changed by his work — many of whom may never know his name, but feel his impact all the same.

From all of us at Peace of Mind Therapy: Thank-you George. For your heart, your service, and your belief in the healing bond between humans and animals. 🐾❤️
