We often see an increase in new rabbit ownership around Easter, and many are dumped in shelters before their first birthday. Here are some reasons you may want stick to a plush bunny instead:
1. Rabbits are not good ‘starter pets’ for children. Rabbits are prey animals, so being picked up or cuddled can cause a rabbit to become frightened/anxious and try to get away. They are more delicate than you may realize, and being dropped even from a short height once can cause serious harm. Rabbits are also sensitive to loud noises.
2. Rabbits require specialized care by a veterinarian familiar with their unique needs. Because small mammals can become seriously ill very quickly, preventative care is essential. Many rabbits require multiple clinic visits a year, making their care expensive.
3. Rabbits live around 10 years and require a substantial time commitment. They need at minimum 30 hours a week of cage free exercise with proper supervision.
4. Rabbits have special dietary needs. They require good quality fresh proper hay, and a fresh salad of greens or herbs daily.
Owning a rabbit can be a very rewarding experience, but it is not a decision to be taken lightly.
