Aesops Veterinary Care, Dr Kris Dyck and Dr Lea Stogdale, has moved and we are now providing services and products from Grant Park Animal Hospital, 8 - 1170 Taylor Avenue, Winnipeg

Please phone 204-477-8600 for an appointment

We will continue to be independent and to make our own policies, and, most importantly, we will continue to care for your pets, for you and for your family.

Aesops Vet Care was given two weeks’ notice to move by Veterinary Strategies (the corporation that owns St Vital Veterinary Hospital). We were told to move out for their “restructuring.” The staff at St Vital Veterinary Hospital have been supportive and cooperative with us and our clients.

We are delighted to be moving into Grant Park Animal Hospital. The owners (independent and local) and the staff have welcomed us. Their standards, attitudes, policies and atmosphere are similar to ours. We have previously worked with some of Grant Park Animal Hospital veterinarians and technicians. We are delighted to be re-joining them.

Dr Dyck will be available Mondays to Thursdays.

Dr Stogdale will be available on Tuesdays and Fridays.

Please visit our website site for additional information

Feeding Puppies and Growing Dogs to Reduce Chronic Intestinal Problems

Feeding puppies and young dogs (2-18 months of age) non-processed meat-based diets and adding human food were protective against the development of chronic intestinal problems in adult dogs. This is the finding of an epidemiological study in Finland, just published in the prestigious journal “Nature: Scientific Reports.” Especially protective was the addition of raw bones (including the cartilage such as knuckle bones, necks and backs), people food in the form of table scraps, and blueberries. In contrast, feeding dry dog food or “kibble,” which is an ultra-processed, carbohydrate-based diet, and rawhides were significant risk factors for long term gut problems (chronic enteropathies) in adult dogs.

The complete article can be accessed at: https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-023-27866-z

This study concludes that the best diet to reduce the later onset of chronic intestinal problems is to feed puppies and growing dogs a raw or minimally processed meat-based diet with some human food. Giving raw bones with cartilage (knuckle bones, necks, backs, and carcasses) and blueberries more than twice a week is also beneficial. Reducing the frequency of highly processed diet items such a dry dog food, dog cookies, and rawhides is advisable. Home-cooked diets were associated with neither a protective nor a causative development of chronic gut dysfunction later in dogs’ lives.

F***l Transplants or F***l Microbiota Transplantation

If your dog or cat has chronic gastro-intestinal problems or behavioral issues or refractory overweight, they may benefit from F***l Microbiota Transplantation. This can be done by you, giving the f***l supplement by mouth. Here is some information for you to consider.

F***l Microbiota Transplantation is not just probiotics. F***s includes bacteria (as do probiotics), fungi, viruses and other factors that interact in complex ways for normal gut function.

F***l Microbiota Transplantation (FMT) is a natural approach to such problems as: Gastro-intestinal problems such as nausea, vomiting, soft stool +/- blood or mucus, or diarrhea. Behavioral issues including stress, anxiety, anti-social behavior or aggression. Refractory overweight or obesity that has not responded to appropriate food restriction. There are various criteria and tests required before FMT are likely to be indicated.

F***l transplants can be done by oral administration by the owner at home. The f***s MUST be sourced from a pet that is – Healthy and disease-free.

If you would like to discuss FMT, please phone for a half hour appointment with Dr Lea Stogdale at Ph 204-487-4788. We require all relevant information about previous vet visits and laboratory test results, foods (past and present), supplements and medications that your pet has received and is currently getting. This includes the food, treats, chews and supplements.

Additional information about F***l Microbiota Transplantation (FMT): Major factors that affect the normal gut flora include diet, disease and medications (especially antibiotics). Dysbiosis (an abnormal balance of micro-organisms) results in gastro-intestinal problems, behavioural issues or weight control challenges.

Note that f***l transplants can be given to dogs and cats, orally (not just by re**al e***a) and without prior medication or purging.

Cautions with F***l Microbiota Transplantation

There are no guarantees that this will solve your pet’s problem. Repeated doses may be required in some pets, probably at monthly intervals. The dog or cat source of the f***s must not be infected with parasites or pathogens. The dog or cat source of the f***s must have a friendly character and good body condition. There are no guarantees that this will solve your pet’s problem.

Chronic Gastro-Intestinal Disease or Inflammatory Bowel Disease

The causes of Chronic Gastro-Intestinal Disease or Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) are many. The most common are breed predisposition, food sensitivities or allergies and intestinal biome imbalance. There are four categories of IBD:
• food responsive (wheat gluten or protein sensitivities, but also carbohydrates, cheese or fish, or food additives)
• anti-microbial responsive (especially boxers, bulldogs and their mixes)
• anti-inflammatory (immune modulating) responsive
• non responsive.

Kennel Training Your Puppy

This is often “the most important thing you told me”, clients say. Puppies should be trained to be in their kennel both when you are out and when you are at home. You may not think you need to do this given your present life style. “My husband is at home with the pup all the time.” However, life happens: people get sick, there are medical appointments to attend, birthday parties to enjoy, or even a grandchild who doesn’t like the bouncy dog. Dilated Cardiomyopathy in Large Breed Dogs

The association of dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) in large breed dogs (all giant breeds, dobermans, golden retrievers, airedales, boxers, bulldogs, cocker spaniels and German shorthair pointers) with feeding no grain dog food is still not clear. Only some dogs with DCM have low blood taurine levels. There is some association with feeding dry dog foods containing soy, lentils, peas and chickpeas.

If you are feeding a no grain diet to a predisposed breed, then, just to be on the safe side, add taurine. Read more at https://aesopsvetcare.wordpress.com/current-aesops-news-2008/

Cats Don't Do Pointing

Many dogs understand directional pointing. If you point at an object such as a treat or toy, the dog will follow the direction of your finger or hand and look at the object. In studies, cats respond and go to the bowl that was indicated by pointing. I (Dr Stogdale) am not so sure that this applies in real life, in our houses, with our untrained feline companions. My experience it that my cat just looks at my finger. Try this with your feline pet.

The Canine Aging Brain
Senility or Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome (CDS) affects many older dogs and the occasional very aged cat. Both the severity and frequency increase with age. About 10% of dogs over the age of 10 years show some signs, and about half of dogs over 15 years are affected. This is not just aging of less activity and sleeping more. CDS causes brain pathology and is progressive and irreversible. Read more at https://aesopsvetcare.wordpress.com/current-aesops-news-2008/

HEARTWORM, TICK & LYME DISEASE PREVENTION

It’s that time of year again! The return of warm weather is a welcome change, but along with it comes mosquitoes (which can lead to heartworm disease) and ticks (which may cause Lyme disease). Before you get back out to the parks and lakes with your canine companion, make sure that they’re protected from infection so that you both have a safe and healthy season.
