ALL THAT CAN BE LOST —— It's deeply disconcerting to watch your homeland burn. We had three days of scattered thunderstorms, and the second saw lightning spark the tinder-dry forest. This is a view I've known all my life, stood in this spot a thousand times before, day and night, in every season. But with the land beyond South Mountain so sparsely populated, there's never been anything but darkness in the distance. A vast expanse of stars and moonshine with no competition. There are folks who live up there, though, around a hundred homes in the historic woodland community of West Dalhousie. Their cracked asphalt and rattling dirt roads have had my heart for as long as I can remember, from the early years when we'd take the back way through to Albany Cross by way of Morse Road. It's quite unlikely that you've ever passed through by chance. I've spent hours in those woods, hiking logging roads and circling lakes, visiting the four roadside cemeteries. As I stand here, flames are still a good couple kilometres from the nearest structure, and all residents have long since been evacuated. Out of all that can be lost, it shouldn't be life. Folks from all over are fighting to make that true, and they won't leave until my neighbours come home.
