S O F T E N - “A tiny change today brings a dramatically different tomorrow.” — Richard Bach
When practicing vocal exercises or other mindful, body-based techniques, you often hear, “Relax your jaw, relax your shoulders…” But truly relaxing isn’t always easy, especially when you’re stuck in a sympathetic (fight-or-flight) state or a disconnected dorsal vagal (freeze) state.
Here’s a simple but powerful tip: replace ‘relax’ with ‘soften’.
Take a moment to try this yourself and notice the difference. ⬇️
Close your eyes.
Take a few slow, deep breaths.
Bring your awareness to your body.
Then, guide your attention through your body, gently softening each area:
❥ Forehead
❥ Eyes
❥ Jaw
❥ Tongue
❥ Throat, including your vocal folds (aka vocal cords)
❥ Shoulders
❥ Arms
❥ Hands, including your fingers
❥ Back and spine (from neck to tailbone)
❥ Chest, including your heart, lungs, and the space between your ribs
❥ Diaphragm
❥ Belly, including your digestive organs
❥ Pelvic floor, including your reproductive system
❥ Legs
❥ Knees
❥ Calves
❥ Feet
Besides your muscle cells (myocytes), gently soften all the other cells in your body too, including your vagus nerve and skin (epithelial) cells.
Now pause and notice how you are feeling and sounding*. Has anything shifted or changed?
Share your experience in the comments below, and don’t forget to save this practice for later.
*Try saying the days of the week out loud as a simple check-in.
