This is from a number of years ago in Toronto, and is still so powerful. Who wants to make one and then have a burn party with the drop offs! 🤣
This amazing street display in Toronto was created to raise awareness of how the unrealistic images we see in media and advertising can affect the self-esteem of girls and women. Created by NEDIC - National Eating Disorder Information Centre of Canada, it reads: "For years, body image among girls and women has taken a hit from the beauty industry's ubiquitous message that 'skinny is hot' and any other look is 'not'. Now is your chance to send the beauty industry a message. If you think it's time fashion editors and lifestyle advertisers broadened their definition of beauty and inspired us with a range of different shapes and sizes, ditch one or all or your women's magazines through the slot on the other side of this transit shelter."
With 46% of 9 year-old girls 'sometimes' or 'very often' on diets, girls' self-esteem peaking at age 9 and 80% of girls reporting being afraid of becoming fat by age 10, fostering a healthy self image is a big priority for many parents of Mighty Girls. To help make it easier, we've compiled a collection of excellent books on body image for girls from toddlers to teens in our “Body Image” section at http://www.amightygirl.com/books/personal-development/life-challenges?cat=378
For books for parents that address body image issues, including the helpful guide "101 Ways to Help Your Daughter Love Her Body," visit our "Body Image / Self-Esteem" parenting section at http://www.amightygirl.com/parenting/body-image-self-esteem
And, if you are concerned that your Mighty Girl may be showing signs of disordered eating or are seeking books to help spark more discussion around eating disorders, check out the resources for both Mighty Girls and parents in our blog post “Talking with Tweens and Teens About Eating Disorders” at http://www.amightygirl.com/blog?p=1597
