Want to make sure that you stay connected with your children this summer, but not sure what kinds of activities to plan? Get everyone involved!

by Miss Jane recommends sitting down as a family to come up with activities together that can help to create connection and positive memories. The activities can be as simple as having a picnic, water balloon fights, or bike rides, and don't have to be expensive.

Incorporating your kids in the planning process will get them excited about the activities, and you can use this time to be in the moment together.

We want you to get to know our providers better, so we're starting a new series where we ask them to tell you a little bit about themselves! This week we interviewed about things she enjoys and her best advice for the winter season.

What's your favourite book and why?
I love ALL books, and will read just about anything, however I have a special place in my heart for Harry Potter, Poetry, and Classic Literature.

What is your favourite snack?
Cheese and crackers.

What’s one thing you can’t miss in your morning routine?
I take time to wake up earlier than needed for the day, to enjoy a hot drink, sit in silence, and take a little time for me before the rest of the house wakes up and the day starts. This allows me to feel more awake, calm and collected before taking on whatever might come my way for the day.

What is one piece of advice for managing mood in the dark winter months?
Keeping a routine, even if a simple one that includes a set wake up, and sleep time which can be difficult to stay on top of with the increased darkness and holidays.
Connection is also so important, whether that be with friends, family, phone calls, texts, with pets, or just leaving the house and engaging with others at a store etc. Connections are not always easily available for everyone; however, I have found that going to your local library, or local shop and attempting to engage in a conversation or just provide a simple compliment can open the doors for a connection in a small way.

What are your favourite creative activities?
Crocheting and gardening.

With disruptions to routines over the holidays, it may seem like there are more meltdowns than normal. Remember, it doesn't mean they're a bad child or you're a bad parent. Take a breath and try some of the suggestions above to help them become more calm and regulated.

Giving them a little extra time and support may be all they need to help them navigate their emotions.

Are you thinking you'd like some extra help on some strategies to help out your littles? Connect with our providers Amanda McCooeye, MA C*C - Child & Youth Care Practitioner, RSW Therapy by Miss Jane or for support.

They say our bodies are made of 60% water. This means we must stay well hydrated for our systems to function properly.

Luckily, some of our water intake can actually come from the foods we eat as well! This is why it is so important to eat a balanced diet of fresh fruits and vegetables throughout the day. But, for those who may need the reminder, let this be it today - drink up and stay hydrated! 💧

It is estimated that 50-75% of born females with ADHD get missed! This is because the disorder in this population looks so different than it does in born males. Males typically have the hyperactive-impulsive ADHD where as females are more commonly suffering from the inattentive ADHD. This will find girls silently suffering which results in things such as low self-esteem, confusion, high levels of internal frustration and worry, extreme emotional sensitivity and reactivity (crying and being upset easily), sadness often presenting like depression, and self-blame. This population can also find themselves hyper focused on things/situations/feelings. Many times the symptoms are passed off as personality characteristics! When your young human is struggling, try not to get hung up on individual symptoms. Take a step back and notice all the challenges they experience together. Have them tell you about ‘a day in their life’ from beginning to end. Do not judge. These ways of being are not by choice. ❤️ (this is not female specific…many born males also suffer in silence)❤️
