💕Hormones & Inflammation💕
Are you a woman who struggles with hot flashes way past menopause? Or you struggle with hot flashes and you aren’t anywhere near menopause yet?
Are you a woman who struggles with heavy periods? Or struggle with painful periods and need ibuprofen to help ease your symptoms?
Many women come in to see me for help with hormone balancing. We often discuss hormone testing and how to eat a balanced diet for hormonal health. But testing hormone levels are not the only important thing to consider testing.
Many women underestimate the importance of testing for inflammation when looking at hormonal symptoms.
As naturopathic doctors, we always do our best to treat the “root cause” of symptoms.
When it comes to treating hormones, if chronic inflammation is present then this can make hormonal symptoms significantly worse than they would be otherwise.
For this reason, I often run lab tests to screen for inflammation:
• ESR
• CRP
• ANA (autoimmune screening)
Though I don’t recommend testing inflammatory markers to every patient with hormonal imbalances, I think it is especially important when patients have one or more symptoms of inflammation:
• Hot flashes (even if in menopause)
• Night sweats (even if in menopause)
• Heavy periods
• Painful periods
• Feeling “hot” (you’re in a t-shirt and everyone else is wearing a sweater)
• Joint pain(s)
• Bowel issues (ie. diarrhea, mucus/blood in stool)
• Chronic fatigue
• Muscle or tendon pain(s)
• A diagnosed chronic inflammatory condition (i.e. endometriosis, type 2 diabetes)
If you are someone who struggles with hormonal issues and have any of the symptoms above, reach out and we can discuss running some of these labs.

I am excited to finally announce the safe arrival of our daughter Iyla Davita DeVos! 🥂
Iyla was born a healthy 9lbs 7oz on Sunday April 24th after almost a month of mommy waiting and 4 days of back labour 😅
She is already giving us lots of smiles and loves studying our faces. She is surprisingly strong and alert already! 🥰
Her favorite things so far are:
• Cuddle time
• Stroller rides
• Nursing with mommy
• Sleeping
• Visits with grandparents and aunts/uncles
• Diaper free time
• Fun time with daddy
The first week of being a new mom was certainly a huge learning curve and came with lots of challenges.
I’ve learned that nursing is something we both need to learn! And working on balancing her circadian rhythm with light exposure and wake windows has been great for our sleep routine. 😴
I look forward to seeing the little human she becomes and for her personality to start to develop! She is such a huge blessing, our hearts are so full of love 💗

CLINIC UPDATE!
Dr. Noelle will be going on maternity leave starting March 1st, 2022.
I am excited to welcome Dr. Marianne Trevorrow (ND)! She is currently accepting new patients virtually, and will be taking on the care of Dr. Noelle's current patients starting March 2021.
Dr. Marianne is an experienced naturopathic doctor with close to 20 years’ experience across both Canada and the US. In addition to seeing patients one-on-one, she is the editor-in-chief of one of Canada’s top naturopathic journals. We are very privilledged to have her on our team.
Dr. Marianne: “One of the great benefits of naturopathic care is the ability to get to know our patients individually; their stresses and anxieties, health challenges and unique needs. Whether my patients are coming to see me for hormonal, mood, or sleep problems, have a more complicated concern like chronic or ‘long COVID’ fatigue syndromes, fibromyalgia or an autoimmune disorder, or who are concerned about familial disease risk(s), my goal is the same, to develop an individual treatment plan so we can achieve the best outcomes possible.”
Dr. Marianne will be a great asset to have at the clinic and will be continuing patient care for all new patients who see her.
She is now accepting new patients virtually -- book today to get in before the end of the year!
Warmly,
Dr. Noelle

NATURE & PEDIATRIC WELLNESS: I am proud to say I am on track with planting seedlings for my garden this year! Gardening is one of my absolute favourite summertime hobbies — I can literally feel the day’s stress melt away and my body/mind relax.
Why am I talking about gardening? Because TIME IN NATURE is so crucial not only for our mental and physical wellness as adults, but especially for that of our children!
In my practice I see many children who struggle with poor attention/focus, depression, anxiety and other stress-related behaviours (ie. oppositional defiant disorder, tantrums, etc). As a naturopathic doctor, I am always thinking of ways to support my pediatric patients without always needing a “pill”.
Studies have found that time spent in nature in childhood is associated with:
* Improved mental health resilience as a adult
* Reduced stress & anxiety
* Lower rate of depression
* Improved attention & focus (ADD/ADHD)
* Promotes imagination & creativity
* Improved short-term memory
* Greater confidence
With spring around the corner and the sun starting to warm things up, this is the PERFECT time to plan ways to get your kids outdoors more this summer.
Research has found that kids need a minimum of 1-2 hours of “nature play” and less than 1 hour of “screen time” daily.
Here are a few simple ways to encourage your kids to get outdoors this spring:
* Plant a garden
* Have a bird bath or a bird feeder
* Encourage kids to camp in the backyard
* Make a “green hour” a new family tradition, giving children time for unstructured play in the natural world
* Go on weekend hikes in the spring/summer
* Build a tree house with your kids
* Raise butterflies
Why not encourage our kids to be outdoors if it literally makes them smarter, happier and healthier?!

EGG WHITE FOOD SENSITIVITIES:
Many patients come to me for food sensitivity testing — a blood test to look for foods the immune system is reacting to.
These “food sensitivities” are foods which can be linked to symptoms of: digestive issues (gas, bloating, constipation, diarrhea), acne, migraines, joint pain, eczema and other skin rashes, worsened autoimmune issues, etc.
Sometime “egg whites” shows up on this test, making it hard for patients to find breakfast meal ideas!
One things I say to these patients is you can STILL eat eggs, just eat the YOLKS!
As someone who has struggled with egg white sensitivities myself (and an avid egg lover), I have learned it is still possible to make delicious breakfasts with eggs!
Instead of cooking a whole egg, I will simply separate the yolks from the white in my hand and make a quick-heated yolk.
This morning we made delicious Mexican-style breakfast burritos with lightly cooked yolks:
- 2 egg yolks 🍳
- 2 organic corn tortillas
- onion and pepper, sautéed
- fresh cilantro
- avocado, diced 🥑
- chili powder, coriander and cumin
- a few pieces of your favorite nitrate-free bacon 🥓
If you lightly cook the yolk and then flip, you can even have a runny yolk to flavor the entire dish! 😋
Give it a try and let me know what you think!

SIBO & FATIGUE: This is a great article on SIBO (Small Intestine Bacterial Overgrowth) and fatigue! I see many patients coming in with symptoms of SIBO and absolutely no clue that there is something else going on.
The key SIBO symptoms I hear from patients are:

1. BLOATING to the point of looking "9 months pregnant"
2. Diarrhea, constipation or BOTH
3. I just can't figure out which FOODS are triggering my digestive issues!
4. I have had stubborn ACNE or ROSACEA for years, and it never goes away
5. I have itchy skin or hives that comes and goes
6. Brain fog, like I'm "living in a cloud"
If you have fatigue AND chronic digestive or skin issues, you may have underlying dysbiosis as the cause. Until this dysbiosis is addressed as part of the SIBO diagnosis, these symptoms will unfortunately only continue.
The sooner we can get on top of them together, the better!
If you think this could be you, book a free consult today to discuss what testing or treatment options may be available!

SIBO symptoms can be numerous, and they aren’t always digestive. Learn the many symptoms of SIBO — fatigue, rosacea, and more — and how to treat them.
