Community Friday: Field Story!

Strangest spot I’ve ever taught CPR? An office right next to a coke oven—inside a steel plant! I had to arrive two hours early for a full security check, get escorted into the plant, and it was my first-ever time in a heavy industrial environment. That team was so dedicated to safety, it made the extra effort 100% worth it.

If you’re a supervisor, manager, or part of a Joint Health & Safety Committee, this course is for you. Learn your legal responsibilities, how to spot hazards, and help keep your workplace safe and compliant.

All Ontario workplaces with 20+ workers must have certified JHSC worker and employer members—make sure you’re covered!
Workplaces with 5–15 workers need a Health & Safety Representative (and its recommended that be certified too).

First Aid Tip: How to Help a Choking Adult

If someone is choking and can't cough, speak, or breathe, act fast!

• Ask, Are you choking? If they can't answer, let them know you're going to help.
• Stand behind them and lean them forward.
• Give up to 5 firm back blows between the shoulder blades with the heel of your hand.
• If the object doesn't come out, move to abdominal thrusts:
— Place your fist just above their belly button, grab your fist with your other hand, and give quick, inward and upward thrusts.
• Repeat as needed until they can breathe or help arrives.

Call 911 if the blockage doesn't clear or if the person becomes unresponsive.
