Rewind…

Established in 1870, Wilson and Markle Jewellers holds the distinction of being downtown Woodstock’s longest-running retail business.

For over 150 years, Wilson and Markle Jewellers (originally Wilson’s) has proudly served the community with a diverse selection of fine jewellery, watches, and distinctive giftware.

We’re proud to have such a rich history within our BIA. Our shared past connects us all and brings meaning to the present.

Then and Now…

Throughout the Downtown BIA, many buildings tell stories of transformation and tenacity, from the John White Building, built in 1913 as Woodstock’s first electrified department store and now home to the Woodstock Art Gallery.

The building that now houses the Woodstock Art Gallery is named after Lieutenant Colonel John White, a Scottish-born entrepreneur. After immigrating to Woodstock in 1860, White, along with his brother George, established their first dry goods store at the corner of Dundas and Riddell streets.

The firm marked a century of business in Woodstock in 1960. Though the store was sold to Walkers the following year, John White’s legacy lives on, both the building and the alleyway behind it continue to bear his name.
