Art has a language all its own. In art therapy, we explore what lives beyond words—emotions, memories, and stories that are waiting to be expressed through colour, texture, and form. 🌈✨

Whether you're holding a brush for the first time or returning to a long-lost love of creating, your art can speak for you—loudly, softly, or just enough. 💛

Art Therapy can vary in its definitions but it is a therapeutic form that involves the creative process of self-expression through art materials like paint, clay, coloured pencils, pastels and much more. This form of therapy allows people to express their emotions, which may be challenging to express verbally, through creative means.

The creative process of making art may improve a person's physical, mental and emotional well-being.

You don’t need to be good at art. If you like being creative, doodling or trying something new you may enjoy art therapy.

Follow Mindful Scribbles to see what Art Therepy and my practice is all about. No commitment, just bring your curiosity.

Cheers to a year ahead full of mindful scribbles, play & exploring your feelings.

Often when we think about self care our focus is on the physical act of carrying out the task, like a massage, facial, walk, bath even a nap. While that is important and I highly recommend those, it is also important to recognize your emotions.

Often emotions can be ignored and not given priority. It’s important to embrace your emotions as they show up. From giving yourself even just a moment to feel the glee of being happy, releasing that scream of anger to a full body sobbing cry. Just giving yourself that moment of release is so important, as it lifts off a weight and you can feel lighter. Through this you can gain mental clarity and improve your ability to think things through. By practicing acknowledging your emotions it gets a bit easier for you to move them from the inside to the out where there is more space.

So embrace those emotions and give yourself the space to release.

🌈✨ Embrace the power of creativity! 🎨💆‍♂️

It doesn't matter if you are an artist to benefit from the act of creating something. Pick your medium of choice or whatever you have on hand. Then get making. Enjoy the act of creation and get lost in the flow. 🌟✍️

When dealing with anxiety it can be kind of scary especially if you are just figuring out what has been causing you to feel distressed. I remember when I first discovered I had anxiety it was during a time of transition and a lot of new things were going on. It was supposed to be an exciting time but I found myself feeling so beside myself that I almost walked away from an amazing journey.

But with some support from family and my doctor I realized I was experiencing anxiety. And once I had the diagnosis it was as if a light 💡 went off in my head and it explained so much of the experiences I had as a kid and into adulthood. From there it was a journey in getting to know this creature that had been with me my whole life and what the triggers were and how to deal with them as they came.

As we became acquainted with one another, my anxiety though still scary sometimes (those surprise closet scares …. ) I know that there is something that I need to acknowledge within myself so that I can bring some peace within myself if it’s something in particular going on or if its just simply “just because” and I can utilize my toolbox of coping mechanisms to see what feels good.

Knowledge is power and it also makes things a lot less scary!

Today is World Mental Health Day and I thought it would be a good time to break mental health down.

Just like we have physical health we also have our mental health to look after. ⠀

Even if you don’t have a mental illness it doesn’t mean you will feel great all the time. For example you can feel stressed and burnt out.⠀

Living with mental illness doesn’t mean you can’t have good mental health.⠀

It’s about having a sense of purpose and being able to manage life’s highs and lows.⠀

“Your mental health is affected by numerous factors in your daily life, including the stress of balancing work with your health and relationships.” ⠀

There are many different ways that you can work on your mental health. That includes working with a professional and/or on your own.

Some people choose to work with a medical practitioner or with different types of therapists. This is very personal and each person's needs are different. The important thing is to seek help if you feel you need it, or if you think you could benefit from it.

You can also practice good mental health by working on creating what I like to call a "Mental Health Toolbox". This can include things like journaling, meditating, physical exercise, talking to someone your trust and many other things. These types of activities are intended to help you focus on the moment and give you tools to help when you are in a tough place.⠀⠀⠀

Today, and everyday we must actively make the effort to sit and listen to the Indigenous voices that have been made voiceless because of a system(s) that benefits one over the other. These voices have been actively speaking about their pain that has been inflicted on them for generations through residential schools and sharing their stories of survival. Today is a day for reflection, watch & listen, educate yourself on the true history of Canada . ** Please be respectful of residential school survivors, families and communities, Today is a heavy day where grief is front and centre so please respect their boundaries they have set**

So you are headed off to university/college? First of all congratulations!! Second, remember it’s ok to be scared and feel like you don’t know what you are doing . Going to a new school is scary especially when living away from home.

Make your space feel like home (think 5 senses ):

SIGHT: Try and bring the essence of your room at home with you to school, so bring pictures of family, friends, pets, boyfriend, girlfriend

SMELL: If allowed, bring a scent that reminds you of home, or an object like a pillow. Scent can help bring you into the moment and calm you down. If you happen to have access to a kitchen in your space cooking your favourite meal can also help you feel more at home or baking.

TASTE: Bring your favourite snacks , think “taste of home” , anything that you love to drink or eat at home bring it with you.

TOUCH: stuffed animals are great for this! Or even a favourite blanket from home.

SOUND: listen to music i.e favourite song, if home is located on a busy street and your residence is some where quiet you can always go onto YouTube and find traffic sounds to have on in the background. The idea here is to mimic the sounds you heat at home to ease any of your anxiety.
