When we lose someone we love, we want with all our hearts, to honour their lives and how they lived in the most meaningful way. And that looks different for every family, culture, belief systems and lifestyle.

It has been my privilege to walk with many families in their grief to help to create a ceremony that honours, reflects and includes the elements and people that hold great meaning and reverence in painting the loved one's life story and in creating a final goodbye that helps those who grieve to begin the healing process. Life should be celebrated. The person who has passed should be reflected as they lived, loved, engaged life and grew.

If I can help you celebrate your family member who has passed, I would be humbled to do so. Many people who were not able to celebrate their beloved during Covid-19 are still creating the opportunity for closure and healing.

GOING HOME

Silently dawn appears chasing
the last black of midnight to the west.
The Grand River is alive—
from the marshes the chatter
of awakening birds.

Kneeling in the canoe of choice
the old warrior sets out to find
his ancestral home.
The river is rippled by a gentle breeze
as the paddle digs deep.

Now we float— the search begins.

Past the skeletons of home,
the ghost town of Indiana vanishes,
a great blue heron on the stern
as the rapids at Cayuga can be heard
and are portaged as of old.

The Grand seems quieter now.
As the village of Onondaga slips by
I hear the distant beat of drums calling.
Soon the paddle picks up the beat,
the canoe is as quicksilver
bringing me home.

Greeted by dancing moccasins.
The old warrior has come home,
not to die— but to renew life.

Above the eagle cries approval—
A feather floats gently earthward.
