This week, our team is joining the global call to end gender-based and domestic violence.

In our main lobby, you’ll notice a display where staff are signing their names as a symbolic way of raising a hand to say we see you, we support you, and we are committed to helping stop violence.

Throughout the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, our staff will also be completing mandatory education to strengthen our ability to recognize warning signs of abuse, respond safely and effectively, and refer individuals to appropriate support.

Woodstock Hospital has achieved national recognition for its smart use of blood and blood products. Using Blood Wisely is a national program that aims to preserve the Canadian blood supply for patients most in need of transfusion. The program uses scientific evidence to guide when and how red blood cell transfusions should be used.

“We felt the best way to achieve this designation would be by focusing on education for staff and physicians, while strengthening our internal processes to support appropriate blood use,” shared Dave Rupert, Director of Technical Services, Laboratory and Cardiorespiratory.

This included education sessions led by Dr. Ruijiis, an Ontario Regional Blood Coordinating Network Resource Physician, highlighting the importance of appropriate blood usage. WH’s Blood Management Committee also reviewed and approved the hospital’s blood transfusion guidelines. Staff were further supported with educational materials and resources.

“We carried out monthly audits to keep track of our progress and to ensure that we complied with Choosing Blood Wisely requirements,” adds Dave. “These audits allowed us to provide real-time feedback on blood product orders that did not meet our transfusion guidelines.”

For John, the main reason he began volunteering at Woodstock Hospital is quite simple. “My wife asked me to be here, and so here I am.”

That wife is Louise, who has been volunteering at the hospital for over 21 years.

“I love talking to people,” explains Louise. “I always hope that I am making them feel a little bit better, no matter what they are going through.” When Louise started volunteering, it was at the “old” hospital on Riddell Street. “I volunteered in the coffee shop and then in the Emergency Department,” shares Louise. "When SARS happened, I volunteered in the Outpatient Clinic, which I really enjoyed. When we transitioned to the new hospital, I was able to try so many different things.”

Over time, back trouble started limiting some of her options, but Louise found ways to stay involved. First by making post-operative phone calls, and now by serving as a volunteer at the Information Desk in the main lobby. “I get to greet people coming into the hospital and help them find their way.”

Jishuken in action!

Woodstock Hospital is proud to collaborate with Vuteq, as we work together to strengthen processes, reduce waste, and enhance quality. Andrea from our Front Lines Improving Performance (FLIP) team recently spent a week at Vuteq to take part in a Jishuken. Jishuken in Japanese means “self-learning,” and it is a focused improvement event within the Toyota Production System framework.

This collaboration with Vuteq is one of the many learning opportunities we have worked on together, as it allows us to bring back fresh ideas to help us deliver care even more efficiently.

Since 2021, Woodstock Hospital has been helping patients find hope and healing through the Addiction Response Resource (ARR) Program — connecting them to the community supports that make recovery possible. Through ARR, our dedicated social worker helps patients navigate their recovery journey with guidance, education, and connections to local resources. Together, we’re breaking barriers, reducing stigma, and ensuring no one faces addiction alone.

Amazing Race 2025 is underway! Each year, our Staff Development team comes up with creative and fun ways to transform annual education into an "Amazing Race" for staff. This year's theme, Centered on You, reflects our new Strategic Plan and our commitment to ensuring patients, caregivers, community partners, and staff all have a voice in shaping how care is delivered at WH.

Even in the darkest moments, hope can be a powerful anchor. November 16–22 is Addictions Awareness Week with the theme, “Anchoring Hope.” Our Mental Health Services Team will be sharing information throughout the week about the programs and professionals available to support individuals on their recovery journey. By raising awareness, we can break the stigma, spark change, and build a future where healing is possible.
