Trauma survivors have symptoms instead of memories (Harvey, 1990). Most often, trauma survivors cannot fully remember all the details of the traumatic event, but their body stores the symptoms of the traumatic event, which can manifest as chronic pain, decreased interest, numbing, addiction, hyper-vigilance, hopelessness, shame, irritability, insomnia, etc.
