Today, we pause to honour the survivors of residential schools, their families, and communities, and to remember the children who never returned home. This day is a reminder of the ongoing impacts of colonialism and the responsibility we all share in advancing reconciliation.
The College and Association of Nurses of the Northwest Territories and Nunavut (CANNN) acknowledges that our office is located on Chief Drygeese Territory, the traditional lands of the Yellowknives Dene First Nation since time immemorial. We also recognize that our work regulating the nursing professions extends across the Northwest Territories and Nunavut, which includes portions of Treaties 8, 11, the Nunavut Agreement, and Inuit Nunangat.
We are grateful to live and work on these lands, and we are committed to deepening our understanding of the distinct histories, languages, and cultures of all Indigenous Peoples, including the Dene, Inuit, and Mรฉtis peoples.
On this National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we reaffirm our commitment to listening, learning, and walking together in the spirit of respect, healing, and reconciliation.
