There are SO MANY fake promises diet culture makes us 😮

We will be happier, more accepted, more disciplined if we diet and lose weight. There are several reasons we may continue to engage in these behaviours, even if we know they don’t work or are harmful.

Let me start by saying again that everyone has body autonomy 💚 Dieting is an inherent part of our society and choosing to engage in dieting behaviours makes sense as we continuously receive these messages.

Engaging in diet culture does provide some benefit.

For many, especially those living in larger bodies, it is EXPECTED that you are dieting and actively trying to become smaller. Society is more forgiving than if you choose not to.

It can also be a sort of social bonding, especially for women 👯‍♀️ Many women have tried a diet or behaviour to shrink themselves, so it is something to connect with other women about. It can actually be isolating to decide to NOT engage in these behaviours! I know among my own family and friends, the topic of weight loss and dieting comes up frequently, and almost everyone shares their tips or experiences.

It can also give us a sense of control, especially if we feel out of control in other areas of our lives 💆🏻

Diet culture also promises happiness. "You’ll be happy when you lose X pounds!"

However most of these promises are LIES 🙅🏻‍♀️ If you lose weight, it will never seem enough and there is always the stress of “what if it comes back?”

You can achieve many of the things discussed above through other means that are healthful rather than harmful 💪🏼 Dieting and weight loss will not make you happier. This needs to come from inner mindset work.

Choosing NOT to engage in dieting behaviours will lead to reduced stress, as well as freed up mental energy and space to do the things you enjoy and spend time with those you love 💕

The good news is that you can acknowledge that dieting is not going to work and still feel a desire to lose weight. However if you can try to put this on the back burner, and focus instead on how you are FEELING, you can make improvements in your diet and overall health that are sustainable, fulfilling, and not restrictive 😃

I'm a huge fan of journaling generally, but especially when it comes to healing your relationship with food and body.

Why?

Journaling gives you the space to explore and work through your thoughts and feelings without any outside noise. As someone who is an overthinker, journaling allows me to take the (sometimes chaotic) thoughts from my brain and put it on paper so I can visually see what I'm thinking. It helps to organize your thoughts and feelings, and possibly determine where they are coming from.

The motion of writing and "removing" your thoughts onto paper can relieve stress as well, allowing you to calm down and learn more about what you are thinking and feeling. When you write things down, you may also notice certain trends or patterns. For example, maybe you notice hanging out with a specific person gives you more anxiety.

So how is this related to your relationship to food and body?

👉🏼 you may notice trends or patterns. For example, maybe certain situations or emotions may trigger you more, and you turn to food (although emotional eating is normal and OK, but more on this in future posts)

👉🏼 you can explore your thoughts about yourself and foods. Do you label foods as good/bad? Do you constantly tell yourself you "should" or "should not" be eating a specific food? Do you use positive or negative language towards yourself or body? Does this impact your relationship to food (ex: restricting foods, feeling guilt/shame when eating)

👉🏼 you can use a journal to practice gratitude/appreciation. What has my body done for me today? You may not "love" your body, but you can acknowledge something that your body has done for you!

Do you journal? Let me know how it has benefitted you in the comments below!

When we think of doing things for our health, we often jump to what we need to STOP doing or things we need to CUT OUT. But a more helpful thing to think about is what can you ADD?

🔹Can you add a snack before your back-to-back work meeting so you’re not ravenous afterwards?
🔹Can you add more vegetables for fibre?
🔹Can you add a moment of gratefulness for your arms carrying your groceries?
🔹Can you try out that new dance class you’ve been eyeing?
🔹Can you try sleeping earlier so you’re not dreading get up?

These are just some examples of course, see which one resonates with you or find your own way to ADD something, and try it out! Remember to always give yourself time, patience, and compassion when trying something new. New habits take time!

What will you try to ADD today? Let me know below 🤗

f you feel out of control around sweets or you feel guilty while/after eating them, this post is for you! I use the example of sweets, but this can be applied to any food you feel is “forbidden” or you feel out of control around.

✅ Do: give yourself UNCONDITIONAL PERMISSION to eat ALL foods!

The way to feel at peace with food really comes down to giving yourself UNCONDITIONAL PERMISSION to eat. This lets your body know you have access to sweets whenever you like, so you can eat the amount that is enjoyable to you, and then move on with your day! If you are allowing yourself to eat sweets with limitations (ex. only at birthday parties), it still causes your body to feel chaotic when you DO have access because there is a fear of not having access again anytime soon.

❌ Don’t: skip meals!

It is very tough to apply any other strategies to improve your relationship with food if you are not eating ENOUGH throughout the day. If your body is feeling undernourished, you will feel out of control when you DO eat later. When we’re feeling hungry, we also tend to go towards foods that are higher in calories, sugar, and fats (nothing wrong with these foods) because our bodies are trying to get as much energy QUICKLY to nourish you! It’s a protective mechanism.

✅ Do: honour your cravings!

If you are ignoring your cravings, your body feels restricted. You may try to eat “around” your craving (eating other foods instead) and then you end up eating the sweets you craved anyways… so why not just eat the sweets and then move on? You may also ignore your craving and then eventually when you do have access to sweets, you’ll likely eat A LOT more than if you just allowed yourself to eat it to begin with. Obsessing about a food/craving is much worse than allowing yourself to eat the sweets.

❌ Don’t: assign morality to foods!

Remove the good/bad labels around foods. Of course not all foods are nutritionally the same. However labelling foods as good or bad will only increase your anxiety and guilt when eating the “bad” foods. Remember that food is more than just nutrition. It’s connection, cultural traditions, and it’s tasty! Food is good for the body and the soul 🥰

What does a healthy relationship with food look like? It starts with rejecting diet culture and the importance it places on weight and weight loss. 🙅🏽‍♀️

My page is not a weight loss page, I won’t be encouraging anyone to cut things out or restrict. I still care about your health and well-being. You can make changes to your eating and other health behaviours without pursuing weight loss or restricting. 🍏🥐🍟🍓

However I understand it can be hard to stop wanting to lose weight when we are constantly told we need to be smaller, especially as women or if you are living in larger body. So again, I always support body autonomy. 💪🏽

You don’t need to completely let go of your desire to lose weight if you want to improve relationship with food. But if you’re willing to try to put it aside and explore some other ways to improve your health, please continue to stay tuned.

If you’re curious what you can do to improve your health TODAY without focusing on weight loss, check out my freebie on my website, link in bio! 🎉

Thank you everyone for such a warm welcome, I’m definitely feeling so much love and gratitude ☺️

What’s the purpose of this page? In a brief sentence, my mission is to help you develop and improve your relationship with food while honouring your body, health, and culture 👑

I want to:
👉🏽 Normalize eating and enjoying what you eat without stress
👉🏽 Provide clarity on the nutrition messaging we see daily, and
👉🏽 Help you feel comfortable in your body 💃🏽

Why is this important? Food plays such a big role in our everyday life. It’s a part of pretty much every event and aspect of our lives, it lets us enjoy and celebrate our cultures, and of course, food is delicious!! 🎉 So having a healthy relationship is pretty important. 🙌🏽

Keep an eye out in the coming days for more about what a healthy relationship with food looks like, what anti-diet means, and more! 🤗
