With the warm weather, we've been pumping water out of our backyard 🌊
At one point, I was outside with a shovel, literally pushing waves of water away from the house. The pump couldn't keep up. Every time I cleared some water, half of it came rushing right back.
It felt like I was working hard and getting nowhere 😮💨
Then Grant came home and noticed something I hadn't seen. The water wasn't just sitting there. It was draining in from the back alley. All the neighbourhood melt was running right through our yard.
He dug a small trench to redirect the flow, and the whole situation turned around 🔄
It reminded me of something I see all the time in physiotherapy.
Pain is often just the puddle. The source is usually upstream. You can keep bailing it out, managing symptoms pushing through discomfort, chasing whatever offers temporary relief, but if something upstream is still feeding the problem, it keeps coming back.
That's honestly the part of my job I love most. Figuring out where the water is actually coming from. What's upstream of your pain that nobody has looked at yet? 👀
If you've been stuck with the same aches, tension, or pain that keeps showing up, it might be time to look upstream.
If this one is hitting home. If you've got an ache that keeps showing up and you've kind of decided to live with it, come on back.
Sometimes a fresh set of eyes on what's upstream is all it takes 🤝
