BAYLOR UNIVERSITY PUBLISHES LARGEST STUDY EVER ON MASSAGE THERAPY USE

July 2024

"Many people receive massage therapy and for many reasons. But according to a new study – the largest and most comprehensive ever conducted on the subject – the prevalence of visits to massage therapists is higher than one might have imagined and the reasons may be surprising."

“What our study shows is that it’s probably not helpful any longer to label massage as an ‘alternative’ therapy, with all of the marginality that the term conveys.”

“Licensed massage therapists ought to be respected as mainstream practitioners, whose profession provides a therapeutic approach not just to address pain and functional challenges but to foster wellness and overall well-being, physical and emotional.

Everyone can benefit from working with a skilled massage therapist. They’re the hidden gems in the healthcare system.” - Jeff Levin, Ph.D., M.P.H., University Professor of Epidemiology and Population Health. (Robert Rogers/Baylor University)

Massage therapy can be beneficial for individuals with ADHD by fostering a calming effect, which may reduce hyperactivity and improve concentration. The tactile stimulation involved in massage has been shown to increase dopamine levels, a neurotransmitter often lower in those with ADHD, potentially enhancing focus and attention span

Massage therapy can help alleviate sciatica pain by targeting the tight and inflamed muscles that may be pressing against the sciatic nerve, thereby reducing pressure and irritation. Techniques like deep tissue massage can release muscle knots in the lower back and gluteal region, areas often associated with sciatic discomfort. Furthermore, improved blood circulation from massage can aid in the healing process by delivering more oxygen and nutrients to the affected areas, promoting relief from pain and enhancing mobility.

By relieving tension in the neck and shoulders, a massage can directly address one of the common triggers for migraines, potentially reducing their frequency and severity. The application of specific techniques can also stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system, leading to relaxation and a decrease in stress, which is often linked to migraine episodes. Furthermore, enhancing blood flow through massage not only aids in detoxification but also ensures the delivery of oxygen and nutrients to tissues, helping the body maintain its natural balance and pain resilience

Swedish massage, a timeless practice with roots in ancient healing traditions, brings forth a multitude of benefits for both the body and mind:

- Relieves muscle tension by gently kneading and applying long, flowing strokes, promoting relaxation and flexibility.
- Improves circulation throughout the body, facilitating the delivery of oxygen and nutrients to cells while aiding in the removal of metabolic waste products.
- Reduces stress and anxiety levels through the release of endorphins, the body's natural mood enhancers, and by lowering cortisol, the stress hormone. - Enhances flexibility by loosening tight muscles and improving overall range of motion, making it beneficial for athletes and those with limited mobility.
- Promotes better sleep by inducing a deep sense of relaxation and alleviating symptoms of insomnia and sleep disorders.
- Boosts immune function by increasing white blood cell activity and lymphatic circulation, supporting the body's natural defense mechanisms.
- Alleviates pain associated with chronic conditions and provides temporary relief from acute injuries or overuse.
- Promotes emotional well-being by fostering a sense of calm and tranquility, reducing symptoms of depression and anxiety.

In essence, Swedish massage offers a holistic approach to wellness, nurturing both physical and emotional health for a balanced and rejuvenated life.

Massage therapy can be highly effective in relieving neck pain by targeting the muscles, ligaments, and tissues in the neck region. Through gentle kneading, stretching, and manipulation techniques, massage can alleviate tension and tightness in the muscles, which are often the underlying cause of neck pain. By increasing blood flow to the area, massage helps to promote healing and reduce inflammation, which can further alleviate discomfort. Additionally, massage stimulates the release of endorphins, the body's natural painkillers, providing immediate relief and promoting relaxation. Regular massage therapy sessions can improve flexibility and range of motion in the neck, reducing the risk of future pain and stiffness. Furthermore, massage can address the root causes of neck pain, such as poor posture or repetitive strain injuries, helping to prevent reoccurrence. Overall, massage therapy offers a holistic approach to managing neck pain, providing both short-term relief and long-term benefits for improved neck health and well-being.

Cupping therapy involves placing cups on the skin to create suction, which can promote healing and relaxation. The benefits of cupping include improved circulation, as the suction helps to increase blood flow to the treated areas. It can also help relieve muscle tension and reduce inflammation by drawing stagnant blood to the surface of the skin. Cupping therapy is often used to alleviate pain, such as back pain or headaches, and may also aid in detoxification and immune support. Many people find cupping to be deeply relaxing and beneficial for both physical and mental well-being.
