FACT: What sounds like mumbling is often a sign of early hearing loss. Hearing loss usually develops slowly, making it hard to catch high-frequency sounds like “s,” “t,” and “p.” This can make speech sound fuzzy or unclear, especially when you can’t see the speaker’s face or aren’t familiar with the conversation. You might find yourself guessing whether someone said “stop,” “pot,” or “a lot.”
