Always cut up food that could block off the trachea! (Breathing tube)

Dissected and preserved respiratory block showing the larynx, trachea, and right and left lungs-from a child. This is the posterior view (the back) as if it were sitting in your body.
As a PA you often have to think of anatomy backwards, because you are usually dealing with a patient or an organ that is laying in front of you.
Look in the trachea (windpipe). Do you see something there? Yep. It’s a peanut, and it’s what caused this kid to die.
If you have small children, take note of the trachea diameter. It is not very big. You can see the peanut is wedged. It is important to offer children very small pieces of food or cut larger pieces to prevent this from happening (especially grapes!!).

FACTS:
The hardest part of CPR is recognizing that it is truly an emergency and knowing when to take action.

4 out of 5 cardiac arrests (88%) occur at home, so it’s likely that if you know CPR you may save the life of a loved one.

Early and effective bystander CPR can double or triple a victim’s chance at survival

Only 32% of Sudden cardiac arrest victims receive bystander CPR.

Ventricular fibrillation (VF) is present in almost 90% of adult cardiac arrest; the only way to stop VF is with a defibrillator.
The sooner an AED is used, the more likely it will work.

For every minute CPR is not performed, survival rates fall 10%

The ABCDs of SWIM SAFETY!

ADULT-
Never leave children alone near any body of water, whether a pool, ocean, lake, or even a small stream or bathtub. Tragedy can strike in a moment. Teach your children to avoid water if you’re not around. That way, if they happen upon some water, they will know to come get you first.

BARRIER-
If you have a pool, have a four-sided fence that goes completely around your pool with a self-locking secure gate. It’s your responsibility to keep kids out, even the neighbor kids. Lifejackets are also required for all kids when on a watercraft at all times. No matter how strong a swimmer they are.

CLASSES-
Kids should take swim lessons until they are comfortable and proficient enough to save themselves in water over their heads. Adults should also consider taking lifesaving classes and get certified in CPR. When the moment comes that you need it, you’ll wish you had.

DIVING-
Know the depth! Never dive head first into shallow water or any body of water in which you do not know of the depth with 100% accuracy.
