Let's speak on Rheumatoid Arthritis.

A chronic autoimmune systemic inflammatory disease which commonly presents as arthritis in adults over the age of 16 years.

If it is not diagnosed and completely managed early, within the first two months of onset, then destruction of the affected joints will progress, leading to joint deformities and associated permanent physical disability.

It is very important to consult with your rheumatologist early if you suspect you have rheumatoid arthritis. This will enable prompt diagnosis and initiation of appropriate treatment to avoid permanent physical disability, and other complications due to internal organ involvement in rheumatoid arthritis.

One of the most frequently asked questions we get is whether or not a patient has arthritis. To answer this question, one needs to first understand what Arthritis is.

Arthritis is a medical term used to refer to the presence of joint swelling and/or pain with movement. Joint pain alone is referred to as arthralgia.

So if you have at least one painful swollen joint then, YES, you have arthritis.

But it is what comes next that is crucial. It is important to consult with a rheumatologist who can determine, through a series of tests and examinations, whether or not you indeed have arthritis and to determine the cause of your symptoms. There are many types of arthritis, and each requires a different approach to management and treatment.

Ignoring joint pain or swelling can often lead to further complications. Early diagnosis and treatment are key to avoiding joint damage and physical disability and maintaining the quality of life.

So if you are experiencing persistent joint pain or swelling, don't dismiss it as 'Just another ache,' it could be your body signaling for help.
