The Tc-99m / Mo-99 generator is often called the “workhorse of Nuclear Medicine.”

It is the primary source of Technetium-99m (Tc-99m), the most widely used radionuclide in diagnostic imaging worldwide.
How does it work?
• The generator contains Molybdenum-99 (Mo-99) adsorbed on an alumina column.
• Mo-99 decays to Technetium-99m through beta decay.
• The daughter radionuclide Tc-99m forms as pertechnetate (TcO₄⁻).
• Using sterile saline elution, Tc-99m is separated from the column and collected in a sterile vial.
Half-lives
• Mo-99 → ~66 hours
• Tc-99m → ~6 hours
Because of this ideal half-life and 140 keV gamma emission, Tc-99m provides excellent image quality with relatively low radiation dose.
Clinical importance
Tc-99m is used to prepare numerous radiopharmaceuticals for imaging:
✔ Bone scans
✔ Renal scans
✔ Thyroid imaging
✔ Myocardial perfusion imaging
✔ Hepatobiliary studies
✔ Infection and inflammation imaging

Nearly 80–85% of all Nuclear Medicine diagnostic procedures worldwide rely on Tc-99m.
This small generator quietly powers a large part of modern diagnostic imaging — truly the backbone of Nuclear Medicine.

Every Nuclear Medicine professional should understand the physics behind PET imaging.

Basics of PET Imaging: Physics, Chemistry, and Regulations by Gopal B. Saha is one of the most recommended books to build strong fundamentals in PET.
Understanding the principles behind:
• Positron annihilation
• Coincidence detection
• Detector physics
• Image reconstruction

…helps us interpret PET scans more accurately.

Strong basics → Better clinical interpretation
