…or just from being a NYC doctor 🤪 I’ve avoided getting COVID-19 since the start with proper masking, distancing, etc. But Rona, she finally got me.

I’m in quarantine, doing okay. More importantly, my wife and loved ones are negative and fine.

Funny though how this drawing could easily double as a shot of me overnight on call 🤣😭

My clinic family. They always have my back 🩺✊🏽

Residency is a soul-crushing experience. But clinic each week, working with people I know and love, makes it bearable.

And my clinic family includes the nurses, front desk staff, security staff, pharmacists, medical assistants, and beyond. I couldn’t ask for more. ❤️

Broadway is back! Beetlejuice is BACK! Finally get to see this masterpiece! When I graduated medical school, the show ended early 😭 I was devastated! It’s been a hell of a time since, working as a physician in this pandemic.

But I’m beyond HAPPY, HAPPY, HAPPY to finally see Beetlejuice tonight with my wifey 😁😋

SMH 🤦🏽‍♂️ just pay residents and fellows fairly + give us reasonable hours. Allow us to unionize. Just treat us like human beings. We want to learn and help people, but we don’t need this crazy, archaic system of training physicians to do it.

Trust me, no patient wants a doctor on hour 23 of a 24 hour shift. And I certainly don’t want a mug as a thank you gift for being employed as a physician without control or bargaining power of my hours, pay.

Just my thoughts on recent Doctor Day and Resident/Fellow Appreciation Week 🤷🏽‍♂️

Baby Doc is back…with a vengeance!
😈 It’s been a minute since I did some drawing for fun! Lots of ICU time and other graphic projects have kept me busy. But I’m finally back to drawing graphic medicine comics.

I have a backload of residency experiences (many awful, some hilarious) that I’ll be drawing these next two months!

In the meantime, I have x2 Sunday recommendations for you all:

1. If you haven’t seen The Batman in theaters yet, see it! It was a lot of fun.

2. If you haven’t received your COVID vaccination, yet, get it! It’s safe and effective.

Introducing the Vaccine (“Vax”) Heroes! Here they come vaccinated, supercharged, and empowered to beat the COVID pandemic 💪🏽💉

I’ve been away from the gram and usual comics to draw and create these characters for a vaccine advocacy effort aimed at kids! The project is led by my amazing colleagues and .k.flowers, in conjunction with other pediatric residents in NYC.

Look out for posters of these heroes (in both English and Spanish) at your next hospital or clinic visit! 🏥

This project is supported by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). Funding for printing is thanks to my incredible residency program at Columbia New York-Presbyterian Hospital.

First time I pronounced a patient 😞 I was alone covering our Pediatric Oncology service for the night. She was on comfort care, with a ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunt for her brain tumor. It was Thanksgiving morning when she passed. I was the first to know. I entered her room moments after it happened.

Even physicians need to process grief. 🕊

I’m grateful for her incredible nurse, who spoke Japanese and could communicate effectively with the family. I’m grateful to the empathetic Oncology fellow. I’m grateful to the incredible Palliative Care attending who guided me throughout the entire night over the phone.

Dr. Steve Paik, my Program Director at Columbia. Today is his last day as PD.

Steve will forever be a role model as an empathetic leader. A year ago when I was ready to leave my program because of the incredible demands it placed on its residents, he was there as a source of support.

We met for countless hours. He spoke with compassion, seeing things from my point of view. Connected me with former residents with interests in the humanities who had similar thoughts of leaving. Gave me time off to think through my future career goals. Allowed me to incorporate Graphic Medicine into my training as a resident.

And he’s a remarkable doctor – beloved by his patients who ask for him when admitted to the hospital. A lover of all things NYC like myself (he’ll tell you the best spots to eat in every borough). A savant of medical knowledge (boundless clinical pearls and unique medical tidbits).

I’ll miss him greatly because I’ll be losing a PD who has been a mentor and inspiration to me. But I’m so happy for him because he’s off to become a Dean at the Frank H. Netter School of Medicine, where he’ll shape the next generation of doctors by being the same kind of role model to medical students as he was to me.

I started using a Huion Kamvas 22 Plus pen display to draw in place of my Microsoft Surface laptop and it is the bomb 💣 works so well!

The software I use for my medical comics is Clip Studio Paint ✍🏽

I personally like this drawing better than the original, which talked about MIS-C in pediatric patients.

This particular pose - inspired by the Fearless Girl statue on Wall Street 💪🏽

Screw this pandemic! 🤬 I revisited an old drawing I did of that monster, coronavirus. The inspiration? I’m just tired of…everything 😪 Maybe most of all tired of anti-maskers and anti-vaxxers. I got my booster shot Friday to keep myself, my 93-year-old grandma and my patients safe. It works.

We need to stop the spread. 700,000 Americans dead is 700,000 too many.

Dear Unvaccinated Readers 📝,

Let’s get to the point (no pun intended).

💉the COVID vaccine works – you are 11 times more likely to die, drop dead, leave this Earthly plane, meet your creator, etc. after catching COVID then if you’re vaccinated

💉over 180 million Americans have received the vaccine. It is beyond a proven fact – the vaccine is safe. we’re seeing patients in the hospital for COVID itself, not vaccine side effects.

💉this pandemic is a b! . The vaccine is our best way to kick its a$$, save lives, and get back to living, literally and figuratively.

Please, get vaccinated. I’m tired of watching, hearing about, or dreading people I know and don’t know dying.
