Today is the 114th yartzeit for the victims of the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire. 146 innocent people died in this tragedy, forever changing American labor law. Most who died, were immigrants with little or no money to afford a burial. HFBA buried 22 of these victims at Mount Richmond Cemetery. Today is Tisha B'Av, the 9th of the Hebrew month of Av. In remembrance of the destruction of the Temple, as well as other tragedies, Tisha B'Av is a time to turn to our communities and to our history. Our rabbis teach that chesed shel emet – caring for the dead with dignity – is one of the greatest mitzvot any person can fulfill. By partnering with HFBA, you make it possible to provide a dignified, traditional burial for any Jew in need. In helping to support our mission, you are ensuring every individual's humanity.

Among these traditions is the recitation of the kaddish prayer at synagogue services, the lighting of a memorial candle, and making a donation in memory of those you are remembering. Did you catch our summer Chesed newsletter?

Inside, see some of the ways that HFBA Helps, including in the case of Sarah W., 62, who was buried the day following her passing from cardiac arrest. HFBA discovered that when Sarah got divorced in the 1990s, she couldn’t support her two children. They were ultimately put up for adoption. Sarah's funeral was attended by HFBA's volunteer minyan as well as several friends, who were grateful to be able to say kaddish in her memory.

Today, on , we commemorate the 6 million Jews who perished in the Holocaust. In 2023, we ensured proper burial for 20 survivors without the means for a traditional Jewish funeral. We have and will continue to support those who survived the atrocities of the Shoah as well as any Jewish person in need of a dignified burial.

As sunsets, we end our day at our older cemetery, Silver Lake Cemetery, with burials going back to the founding of the Hebrew Free Burial Association. In 1909, we opened Mount Richmond Cemetery which has been our main location ever since. While Silver lake hasn't been as active, we have continued to care for it and all those buried there. Thank you to everyone who donated today on Giving Tuesday. You have helped those in need received a dignified burial.
