Do you ever feel like you don't know whether you slept or not?

Or have you ever felt like you've gone days without sleeping?

This is usually due to sleep misperception or "paradoxical insomnia" in its more extreme form.

Save this post so you know what to do next time this happens!

You've probably heard of how important sleep is to your overall health, but did you know sleep can have a big impact on your gut health?

How well you sleep can affect how well your digestive system functions, and your digestive health can also play a role in how well you sleep. It’s a two-way street!

Follow for more practical, evidence-based sleep tips, and share this with someone who needs to hear it!

You with me? 😩

Here’s the thing. It’s normal to feel rundown sometimes — the not normal to feel like 💩 ALL the time.

You can only drive with the check engine light on for so long before things go wrong with your car (spoken from experience… 😳), same for operating on not enough sleep.

If you’re always tired that is not normal and it’s time to address that. You’ll be amazed how much better you feel once you do!

I don't know who needs to hear this but you are not a "bad sleeper."

While it's true that some people have predisposing factors to sleep problems, it doesn't mean you have to just accept a life of poor sleep - I'm living proof of that.

So even after you have a bad night, keep doing things that bring you joy!

But more importantly, focus on finding what's causing your sleep problems, so you can find the best evidence-based solutions to fix it.

What do you think's causing your sleep problems? Let me know in the comments.

Trouble falling asleep and don't know why?

Watch this video for good way to tell if your problem is a circadian rhythm issue aka. your body clock. 🕕

This might happen because of:

✈ travel (jet lag)

👨‍🏭 irregular work schedule

🐦you're an extreme morning person/early bird

🦉you're a night owl

Sound familiar? Comment if you relate 👇 and follow for more tips on how to tackle this problem.

Does it REALLY work?🤔

Mouth taping is a growing trend where people tape their mouths shut at bedtime (with a special kind of tape!) to promote nose breathing, potentially addressing snoring or bad breath issues.

BUT mouth taping also comes with potential side effects including breathing challenges and anxiety. These make it HARDER to sleep well!

So if you regulary have trouble falling asleep or falling back asleep, I would skip the mouth tape and address the underlying cause of your insomnia.

And if you're looking to address snoring or another breathing issue, consult your doctor before trying mouth tape and, more importantly, GET TESTED FOR SLEEP APNEA!

Tired on the couch but wide awake in bed?
You’re not crazy — and you’re definitely not alone.
Your brain has learned that the couch is where you relax and your bed... is where you stress.
This concept of "conditioned arousal" is one of the most common drivers of insomnia, yet most have never even heard of it.
And the solution isn’t melatonin, a new pillow, or “just relaxing.”
It’s retraining the brain.

Get that part right and the rest finally starts to work.

Caffeine not doing the trick anymore? Here's why 👇

If you have caffeine often enough (like every day) your body actually forms a tolerance to it, so you need more to feel that energy kick.

So be sure to take breaks from caffeine to keep that coffee magic alive, and if you feel like you need caffeine everyday to function, that's a good sign that it's time to address your sleep problems.

Want to know what NOT to do when you can’t sleep??? 👇

Anything that frustrates you!

Frustration triggers your fight-or-flight response...
.. which pumps cortisol through your body....
..which is like caffeine on steroids!

Plus if being awake = you have to do something boring.

You're more prone to dread being awake = makes it hard to sleep.

And you're more likely to worry if you do wake up = makes it hard to fall back asleep.

So the next time you can't sleep, skip the boring book or chore, and instead do something enjoyable and relaxing.

Then go back to bed when you feel sleepy again.

The less we fear being awake at night the less it happens and the easier it is to fall back asleep.

Is Insomnia the same thing as sleep anxiety?

Believe it or not, it actually depends on which expert you ask.

Different parts of the sleep medicine community use the word "insomnia" to mean different things.

Needless to say, this can get a little confusing. So watch the video for a more detailed explanation.
