From Stability to Mobility: Progressive Taping Techniques for Dance Injuries.

🩹Taping is a tool almost every dance medicine practitioner reaches for - but using it well is a clinical skill that takes attention, practice, and dancer-specific know-how.

It’s not just about slapping on support- it’s about understanding how and why to use tape to cue movement, reinforce alignment, and support performance without getting in the dancer’s way.

🎯 The more refined your taping strategy, the more impact it can have.

💬 What’s helped you hone your taping skills over time?

I’ve been particularly working on my taping and padding techniques of the foot. Assessing and analyzing what the dancer’s foot needs in terms of optimization or suppression of mobility and how I can enhance the duality of the foot’s function while still offloading exhausted tissues has been quite the interesting challenge. Have I overcorrected? Yes! Have I undercorrected? Yes! Have I figured out the right combination. After years of practice and plenty of trial and error.

What’s your success/failure history with taping dancers?

One of the things i’ve learned when taping the foot and ankle is to ensure I’ve considered the balance between motion suppression and motion enhancement. Lots of trial and error over the years but this is what peaks my curiosity.

What a delightful evening it was! I kicked off the night savoring a fabulous kale salad perfectly paired with truffle fries and a very dirty martini at 🍸🥗 Seriously, this salad has a cult following and I was only too happy to discover it on the advice of numerous dancers. Yum, yum, yum. A huge shout out to my wonderful friend and colleague, Lindsay, Backiev for the great company. It only took us 10 months for our schedules to align since she moved to NYC to work at Seriously, where does the time go…

The night was made even more special with a champagne toast celebrating two incredible ABT Principal dancers, Hee Seo & Cory Stearns, marking their 20-year milestone with the company. Many congrats!!!🥂

I also had the pleasure of reconnecting with Julie Daugherty, whom I last saw in-person at the 2019 IADMS conference in Montreal. It’s been way too long! It was also fantastic to meet three other dance medicine PT’s: Kate Besong, Carla Foster & Natalie Farrah. Kate also works at ABT while Carla and Natalie work at 🤝💃

It was truly wonderful to have the time to step out of my little corner of the field and connect with such talented and passionate individuals. Until next time! 💫

5 Reasons why EVERY dance provider & educator needs to learn about eating disorders, disordered eating, and Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (REDs aka under-fueling):

1️⃣You care about dancers’ health

2️⃣You want dancers to dance better

3️⃣Prevention is everyone’s responsibility

4️⃣Early identification is key

5️⃣When you know better, you can do better

BOOP, BOOP, de BOOP!

Had a ton of fun seeing this show last weekend. Hubbs was home with a foot injury so I brought my dear friend Kimberly along for some fun.

Congrats to everyone who is a part of this fun show that is giving classic Broadway vibes. ❤️

I had the pleasure of attending a launch of Monika Saigal’s new book, Nourishing Dance: An Essential Guide on Nutrition, Body Image and Eating Disorders at this past weekend.

This book is a nutrient-dense resource that expertly highlights the deficiency of nutrition-based education, the sociocultural influences on body image and the risk of developing eating disorders in the dance community.

A must read for anyone who employs, trains and cares for dancers.

Run, don’t walk to your computer and order your copy today. It’s such a valuable resource!!!

Friday Fun Day in Anatomy at NYU: Tisch Dance!!! 😄😄👏🏻👏🏻

I’m always trying to find creative and interactive activities that will reinforce the information I present in my lectures. Today we focused on the mobility and stability of the abdominal wall. Understanding the functional requirements of this multilayered muscular cylinder can be challenging to comprehend for many dancers. Many suck in their gut or increase their infra-abdominal pressure to make this cylinder rigid to find stability, which doesn’t support fluid movement and optimal breathing patterns.

After leading my students through a location practice exercise which included a review of origin, insertions and fiber directions using colored tape, we moved to a movement lab focused on the common and unique actions of the abdominal muscles. We then wrapped things up with a discussion and demonstration on how we can also use the abdominals to control movement and posture of the Lumbopelvic girdle.

Next week, I’m adding in the psoas followed by muscles and fascia’s of the back. Then it’s onto the “Circle of Integrity” based on the work of Diane Lee.

We had a blast including a lot of laughs which is an ab workout in itself. 😂
