Sciatica, its a pain in the bum ... literally!!
Sciatica is a general term used to describe the pain and symptoms that occur when the sciatic nerve becomes compressed, inflamed, or irritated. This pain is usually felt somewhere along the path of the sciatic nerve and can be accompanied by tingling, numbness or weakness.
The sciatic nerve is the longest and widest nerve within our bodies; it starts at the bottom of the spine and continues down the gluteal area (the bum) and back of the thigh. Once it reaches the knee area it branches into two nerves, going down the back and side of the calves.
Causes of sciatica can include but is not limited to:
💥Herniated disc
💥Degenerative disc disease
💥Osteoarthritis
💥Spinal stenosis
💥Tight muscles in the gluteal area (Piriformis syndrome)
If you've ever experienced this pain before, you know it's pretty uncomfortable and can have quite the impact on your activities of daily living. But did you know that massage therapy can help?
While massage can't fix all of the underlying causes of sciatica, massage therapy can help reduce tension along the spine and gluteal muscles to help relieve pressure on the spinal vertebra and sciatic nerve. Massage therapists can also give you remedial exercises to perform at home to help!
