I came across this interview on Youtube last year when I was studying the mental game in baseball. It gave me chills. Who was this soft-spoken down to earth human with such amazing insight? Well, Dr. Ken Ravizza quickly became my favorite Sport Psychologist; I refer to and quote him often, so saddened I never got to meet him in person.

“Make sure they are breathing, because if they can’t breathe they aren’t going to hear what you are saying.” This rings true for any sport or tactical situation where arousal gets too high and ends up “to the right of the curve.” If you coach, learn about the breath.

Want a tip? Put your hand on your athletes shoulder, say their name and tell them to exhale. The tactile and auditory helps them switch to focus on you, and they really need to “empty out” before taking a deep breath (that will slow their breath as well).

Thoracic excursion, or how much your chest widens on the inhale has been done for decades as a measure of pulmonary health. And research has demonstrated that lung function and this number of "range of motion" is correlated. Since the 1850s, during the tuberculosis epidemic, it let doctors know how sick their patients were. We have updated it to measure optimization; so now you should look at where you breathe from (top of the body, middle or in between) then add your "ROM" range of motion to get your Breathing IQ. You’ve heard this quote from the hip hop preacher Eric Thomas ..it’s about how bad you want it. How much you are willing to work for it, what ever “it” is to you.

How about we rethink this…If you aren’t breathing in line with what you are doing, you can want it more than anything, it’s hard to get your body and brain 100% on board.

So if you are scared, and you are telling yourself “I got this” it might work part of the time. But you are more apt to have success if your breathing is registering with your brain and nervous system as “I got this” – not just your trying to repeat it over and over to convince yourself.
