Digestion- How we digest our food throughout the whole GI Track - be sure to watch until end!
The process of digestion begins in the mouth, where food is mechanically broken down by chewing and mixed with saliva containing digestive enzymes.
From there, the food travels down the esophagus and enters the stomach. In the stomach, the food is further broken down by stomach acid and digestive enzymes, forming a semi-liquid mixture called chyme.
The chyme then moves into the small intestine, where the majority of digestion and nutrient absorption occurs.
The small intestine is lined with millions of tiny finger-like projections called villi, which increase the surface area for nutrient absorption.
Enzymes produced by the pancreas and bile from the liver and gallbladder aid in breaking down carbohydrates, proteins, and fats into smaller molecules that can be absorbed by the villi.
The nutrients, once absorbed, are transported through the bloodstream to various tissues and organs in the body, providing the necessary energy and building blocks for cellular function, growth, and repair.

The undigested waste material moves into the large intestine, where water and electrolytes are absorbed, and the remaining waste is formed into stool for elimination.
Digestion is influenced by many systems in the human body. Dysfunction in one system (nervous, endocrine, cardiovascular, skeletal, muscular, ymphatic, urogenital will negatively atfect the digestive system.
