We may be 1 full week into 2025 but we really had to sit with and reflect on 2024.

If we are keeping it 100, it was a challenging year but also one of growth.

This is just a small look inside the things we are doing and have done at Ashe Birthing Services over the past year.

In 2024 Ashe:

- Served hundreds of families in NYC, over 90% BIPOC
- Won two Silver Cannes awards for our work on The Impossible Journey, an illustrative film on maternal health
- Built the capacity to build honorable data analytics program internally to track our impact in community
- Recorded and edited childbirth education series (coming soon)
- Was awarded National Minority Quality Forum's (NMQF) 40 Under 40 in Health Award
- Panelist at The United Nations General Assembly on Building Transnational Solidarity and Action Towards Health Equity: Closing the Maternal Health Gap for Women and Girls of African Descent

We cannot wait to share more about our childbirth education series (YESS it is FINALLY coming)!

Thank you all for the support, love and trust.

I have never heard this discussed and we need to. Many of us are moving in silence or whispers, but it’s really hard to be in this field while also trying to get pregnant or whilst losing a pregnancy.

Holding space for others in their joy, grounded in a trust that it’ll happen for you too.

I was at a birth earlier this year when my body started releasing a pregnancy. I paused attending births now so I can do fertility treatments and spiritual work. It’s a time to radically take care of myself and accept care from people that love me.

It’s a mind f**k to try your whole life to NOT get pregnant and then for it not to happen when you *want it to or feel ready for it.

Doulas, OBs, midwives - you’re human too. You hold many identities. We all do. It’s okay to dance in them all…to be a caregiver and space holder by profession and a big baby at home. You deserve everything you need in this moment.

Sending so much love to all going through this with me,

Emilie

P.S: Ashe doulas are still taking clients lol

We are kicking off our educational series starting with *nutrition* during pregnancy.

During pregnancy, it is crucial to get necessary nutrients for both yourself and baby!

There is no one sized fits all diet during pregnancy. It is important to be kind to yourself, show yourself some grace and do the absolute best you can. Whether you're taking a food based prenatal or are trying to eat mindfully during this time, you have different ways to approach it.

Here are some key nutrients to keep in mind when choosing (prenatal) vitamins and creating balanced meals:

Folate
Benefit: Helps prevent neural tube defects (NTD)
Where to find: Citrus fruits, dark leafy greens, and legumes. It is often recommended to take a vitamin containing folic acid to ensure adequate intake!

Iron
Benefit: Helps to prevent anemia Where to find: Lean meats, dark leafy greens, and beans. Pair with foods rich in Vitamin C to aid your body’s absorption.

Calcium
Benefit: Aids the development of baby’s bones, muscles, heart and nerves
Where to find: Dairy products and dark leafy greens (which contain smaller amounts)

Vitamin D
Benefit: Helps your body absorb calcium and keeps your immune system strong
Where to find: Fatty fish, eggs, and of course, from the sun!

Iodine
Benefit: Supports the development of baby’s nervous system
Where to find: Fish, dairy, and iodized salt

DHA (Docosahexaenoic acid)
Benefit: Helps baby’s brain and eyes develop
Where to find: Fatty fish and eggs with added DHA

“WASHINGTON () — The Supreme Court on Thursday unanimously preserved access to a medication that was used in nearly two-thirds of all abortions in the U.S. last year, in the court’s first abortion decision since conservative justices overturned Roe v. Wade two years ago.

The justices ruled that abortion opponents lacked the legal right to sue over the federal Food and Drug Administration’s approval of the medication, mifepristone, and the FDA’s subsequent actions to ease access to it.”

Do you know that miso is an ulcer medication? Its used off label (also known as cytotec) to help ripen the cervix and induce labor, as well as postpartum as a potential treatment for hemorrhage.

As per , “ALBANY, N.Y. (June 10, 2024) – The New York State Department of Health today announced that State Health Commissioner Dr. James McDonald has issued a statewide standing order that all New Yorkers who are pregnant, birthing, or postpartum would benefit from receiving doula services. This standing order – secured by Governor Kathy Hochul in the FY 2025 Enacted Budget – will allow more New Yorkers to access doula care because a recommendation for doula services is required in order to be eligible for Medicaid coverage. The standing order will also make it easier for birthing parents enrolled in other health plans to access doula care. Doulas provide physical, emotional, educational, and non-medical support for pregnant and postpartum individuals before, during, and after childbirth.”
