At the beginning of the Gregorian year, there is a big push to enact change. Many are looking forward to where and what we want to be. What will the year bring? How do we want to show up in it?
I don't begrudge anyone their tools for motivation or inspiration. However, I question the pressure we put on ourselves to evolve, change and create in this time which, in the northern hemisphere, is still deep in the belly of winter.
For those who celebrate Christmas, there was a sprint at the end of the year while nature was softly whispering "slow down". Many of us didn't listen and pushed harder. Only a week later, came the messages (from within and without) "The year is new! What you were last year wasn't good enough! How are you going to change??"
Where, in all of this, are the quiet moments to take stock? When do we exhale and rest in the space before the next breath in? When do we get to rest - physically, mentally, and spiritually?
If you are feeling the pressure of beginning again and sensing that you haven't even had time to complete the last cycle, you aren't alone. Know that saying "no, thanks" is a perfectly valid and healthy response to the insistence that you do more, be more.
You are good just the way you are. Breathe that in, let it go and pause on the exhale. Wait before breathing in - be in the emptiness. That emptiness where possibilities are endless and knowing what those will look like is impossible.
Give yourself permission to rest in these dark days. The vision will come, the growth will happen - there is no way that it can't because that is the nature of life. Trust.
