How is your "Soothing System"?
Clinical Psychologist Dr. Andreas Comninos wrote a very powerful article (and self-help tool) about our brain's "3 Emotion Regulation Systems" (Drive, Soothing and Threat). He states that most of our psychological difficulties are caused by an overuse of the Threat and the Drive system and an underuse of the Soothing system. The good news: Soothing skills can be learned!

"How to make stress your friend". TEDtalk by Kelly McGonigal, health psychologist:
"When your body releases adrenaline when stressed, it also releases Oxytocin ("the cuddle hormone " - see earlier blog post : https://coppetcoachingcounseling.com/blog/our-bodys-own-anti-dote-to-stress/). Oxytocin makes you crave for social support and connection. So our stress response has a build-in mechanism for stress resilience (human connection). "
"When you start viewing your stress response as helpful, you create the biology of courage. And when you chose to connect with others under stress, you can create resilience".
Worried that your child will become a "difficult teenager"? That they will suffer from depression, anxiety, eating disorders or behavioral problems?
Emotional problems (emotional regulation disorders) play a role in the development of psychopathologies and here is the good news: they can be prevented!
Emotional regulation techniques can be learned from an early age, either through preventive or positive (strengthening competences) intervention.
Some examples of possible interventive techniques:
- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (changing dysfunctional thought patterns)
- Emotional-Focused CBT
- "Coping Power" (for children/adolescents with agression problems)
- "mindfulness" (learning how to accept their emotions, consciously, present)
- "expressive writing" (learning how to express and process their emotions)
- "positive youth development" (learning how to be grateful for what they have and focus on how to be happy)
Encouraging note: most adolescents go through their teenage years without too much emotional disturbance. But, if you detect emotional problems early on, you can change their (teenage) life by helping them learn emotional regulation skills early on.

To all parents of adolescents (10-22yo):
If you are worried about your children for one of the following reasons:
- they show signs of depression, anxiety or posttraumatic stress disorder (internal disorders)
- they show signs of behavioral problems (I.e. anti-social , conduct disorder, defiant, substance abuse)
- they show signs of eating disorders
- they show signs of autism spectrum disorder
- or: anything else that you believe requires professional intervention
..But you don't know how to find them what they need, this is an excellent website to start: https://www.nji.nl/interventies.
It is a databank, you can simply search "autisme" or "control" or "depression" (any word that you believe represents the problem or need of your child and you will find a variety of solution- and competence focused intervention options.
