Blue-eyed humans all have a single, common ancestor.
Research from the University of Copenhagen has revealed that every blue-eyed person on Earth can trace their lineage back to the same, one peson.
Scientists discovered that a genetic mutation affecting the OCA2 gene occurred 6,000-10,000 years ago, altering melanin production in the iris and transforming brown eyes to blue.
Unlike brown or green eyes, which show significant genetic variation, all blue-eyed individuals carry the exact same genetic “switch” in their DNA, meaning they inherited this trait from the same ancient individual. This groundbreaking discovery highlights the intricate ways in which genetic mutations shape human diversity.
Interestingly, this mutation neither benefits nor harms survival—it is simply a result of nature’s ongoing genetic shuffling. The study compared blue-eyed individuals from different parts of the world, including Jordan, Denmark, and Turkey, confirming that their eye color stems from this single mutation. While traits like freckles, hair color, and eye color continue to evolve, the consistency of the blue-eye gene demonstrates how one small genetic change can spread across generations.
