THE STORY OF A LOST WALLET:
On a beautiful summer evening, a man looks out his window. He sees his neighbor on all fours in the street, appearing to search for something under the streetlamp. He thinks to himself, « I’ll help him find whatever he’s lost ».
He approaches his neighbor and asks, « What did you lose? »
The other replies, « I lost my wallet.
What bothers me most isn’t losing the money that was in it, but all my ID and credit cards ».
Our Good Samaritan starts searching too, around the streetlamp, on the sidewalk, in the street, on the nearby lawns.
After many unsuccessful efforts, he finally asks, « Are you sure this is where you lost your wallet? »
Naively, his companion says, « No, not here, I lost it in the field over there. »
The man can’t believe his ears.
How could his neighbor think he’ll find his wallet under the streetlamp when he lost it somewhere else?
Curious, he asks him to explain his behavior.
The other replies candidly, « Well, it’s quite simple: it’s much brighter here. »
We often search for answers in the most convenient or « well-lit » places even when we know the real answers lie elsewhere, hidden in the darkness we’re reluctant to face.
