Let Go
When children are growing and changing they want a way to voice their independence of personhood and thought. Instead of insisting that “your way is the only way,” let go and allow room for them to express their thoughts and emotions.
Increase Quality Time ⏰
Sometimes arguments are really a cry for attention. Take a moment to plan some purposeful quality time with your child so they feel seen and heard.
Pursue Positive Interactions 🤗
Are you constantly nagging your child to do the same things over and over again? Even though there can be a good reason, children might take these “reminders” as negative criticism that results in backlash. Try to balance our interactions to highlight all they ARE doing in between reminders for chores, to-dos, etc.
Create a Dialogue 🗣
The best way to resolve any argument is to open up a dialogue. Sit down with your child and ask them about their perspective and emotions regarding the situation at hand. When you can both discuss openly and honestly, you set a foundation for respect and success!
Go to the Root ⛏
What’s at the root of this argument? Is there a deeper underlying emotion: fear, anxiety, stress, sadness, etc that is driving your child to lash out? Slow down and try to uncover what they are holding inside…maybe it’s something they aren’t even aware of themselves.
