The octobass is a massive bowed string instrument designed to produce incredibly deep sounds beyond the reach of other instruments in its family. Created in the 19th century by French luthier Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume, this towering double bass stands over three meters tall and can produce notes so low they approach the limits of human hearing.

Because of its enormous size, the octobass cannot be played like a standard double bass. Instead, musicians use a system of pedals and levers to press the strings and control the sound. Though rarely used in musical history, some orchestras and composers have experimented with it to add an extraordinary depth to symphonic works.

A true marvel of instrument-making, the octobass continues to intrigue classical music enthusiasts and historians alike. Only a few exist in the world today—the original is housed in Paris’ Musée de la Musique, with others displayed at the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna and the Musical Instrument Museum in Arizona.
