Ashtanga Yoga Luzern

Ashtanga Yoga Luzern Ashtanga Yoga classes in Luzern Ashtanga Yoga Luzern was born out of dedication of local students and passion of a teacher. Pattabhi Jois.

Even though Ashtanga is new for yogis in Central Switzerland, we have already established a group practicing yoga in Mysore classes, following the tradition of Sri K. Martyna Syguda is a yoga teacher and a psychologist. She started practicing yoga when she was 12 years old and since then maintained a daily practice. After being introduced to Ashtanga Yoga Martyna has been regularly visiting India

to learn primary, intermediate and advanced series from her teacher Sharath Jois in Mysore. In 2014 she got authorized level 2. by KPJAYI to teach both the sequences.

Do you have to be able to do lotus in order to do yoga? No. Then why bother? 🤪 Padmasana is an iconic yoga pose that brings to mind mediating yogis - it doesn’t only allow you to sit with your spine fully straight, but it becomes a mudra that your mind will associate with a peaceful state. It is an entry point to a lot of fun variations, many of them having therapeutic qualities. Attempting lotus only makes sense if your body is ready and you don’t try to break your knees along the way! Starting with hip-opening preparations and gradual progressions will help your lotus blossom 🪷
Are you struggling to put even one foot into half-lotus? Or maybe that’s easy, but you can’t quite cross both the legs or your lotus is not very comfortable? I will share some useful tips with you in a workshop this Friday! Link in bio 🧘🏻‍♀️

I like this picture because it shows well the adaptability of the Ashtanga series - each student does the asana differently. We do follow a set sequence, but each yoga pose has many steps and modifications allowing you to gradually progress at your own pace and according to your body type. It’s especially important when it comes to the so called gatekeepers - the most difficult asanas of the sequence, Marichyasana D being one of them. You think you will never be able to do such pose? Let me prove you wrong 🙃

Don’t give up on the challenging asanas! You can learn the step-by-step progressions and modifications of the Primary Series core asanas in the workshop next Friday 💪🤓 Early bird price ends tonight!

Feels empty without you, boss.

I took the picture on the last day of the last season in Mysore. Never thought it will be an end of an era.

Sending love to Sharathji’s family and to the Ashtanga community. He will be missed dearly 🖤

People often think they have to be very flexible and do advanced poses in order to benefit from yoga. But as Patthabi Jois used to say: “Yoga is mind medicine” and you notice healing effects pretty soon after you start practicing. You quickly become more comfortable in your body, but even more importantly your mind starts slowing down and you feel the post-yoga bliss after the class 😌✨ That can be done through the simplest of movements and no advanced asana is required for the yoga medicine to work.

If you wanna learn more about this truly healing practice, I will teach another introduction workshop in just two weeks - DM me for details 📲 Or just drop in for a trial class - feels so good, you will wish you had done it sooner!

I don’t consider myself overly esoteric and I tend to keep my feet on the ground. But I have to admit that certain spaces related to spiritual practices do have a special energy, as if the walls could absorb the peace that is being created in between them 🏯💫 I could witness our yoga studio developing this special vibe over the years and I certainly had this feeling when I first visited Château Gottrau, a beautiful countryside mansion that has been hosting spiritual retreats for decades. Even just being in this house makes you feel better and when you add to it several yoga classes a day, it becomes a full on soul spa 🌅 Each year I leave the retreat there feeling centered and connected, like I just went home, to a temple and for holidays with friends in one weekend ☺️
I will teach at Château Gottrau in exactly one month, from September 5th to 8th. It was fully booked, but two spots just got free, so even more spontaneous yogis have a chance to join us this year 😀 DM me if you have questions!

On Sunday my thoughts were with all the teachers that brought me to the point where I am now. Guru Purnima is a day to celebrate people who dedicated their life to sharing their wisdom and experience with us, hopefully leading by example. I’m not one to idealize teachers - they deserve our admiration, but we have to remember that they are regular people with flaws and everyday problems. The fact that they go through their lives and still show up for us, makes me even more grateful 🌷

Sending love to and many others that have influenced me on my journey 💕

I will continue passing on what I’ve learnt from my teachers in the next workshop about chanting and pranayama this Friday. You have 24 more hours to register ⏳

Every once in a while you meet a teacher and you think “we are all just doing some asanas, but HE is a real yogi”. Rolf was such a person - humble and quiet, radiating inner peace and wisdom. I won’t forget his tropical yoga shala in Goa and I wish I could have spent more time learning from him. It’s a beautiful life that touches so many souls, spreading peace to the farthest corners of the Earth. Thank You, Rolf 🙏

People often come to yoga to alleviate back pain and feel more comfortable in their bodies. It can be quite disheartening when a practice that initially made them feel better becomes a source of pain 😣 Even worse if an accident during an asana practice leads to an injury that can last for months 😬 Although I consider yoga to be a relatively safe form of movement, injuries do happen and even more often a body issue that we weren’t aware of can show up while we are on the mat. We should try to make the practice possibly safe, but also know how to react when pain shows up. The attitude towards the injury will be equally important - we don’t want to add mental suffering to the pain we experience. While recovering we should remember that, like everything in life, the pain will eventually pass 🙏

Next Friday at 7.15pm I will tell you more about preventing injuries and working with pain on the yoga mat. Early bird price ends tonight! 🐥

Banyan trees symbolise immortality in India - their expansive roots make them particularly resilient and they can live for several hundred years (some say thousands!)🌳🧓🏻 Sometimes we take for granted that, on the top of many other benefits, yoga contributes to our health and longevity. The method is intelligently designed to support all systems of the body, to purify our organs and to improve circulation that distributes fresh blood and nutrients🫀🫁🔃 Practicing yoga also naturally nudges you towards a healthier lifestyle and you are more likely to take care of your body once you’re in touch with it.

All of this will be the topic of our workshop this Saturday. If you still wanna benefit from a lower price, book it within the next 24 hours! ⏰

Over the years I’ve visited many nice yoga places, but I have to say, this was probably the most beautiful location I’ve ever taught in 🏔️🫠 The view from the yoga room was so stunning, it was hard to keep the drishti and not look outside 🫢 Being there in such a wonderful group of yogis, it was really hard to leave after the weekend! Oh well, I guess we will have to come back 🤷🏻‍♀️😉

Many students feel a bit left to themselves when they do the finishing poses. The last, more meditative part of the sequence is often done in a quiet place, some Shalas even have a separate room where people can take their time to finish the practice and take rest 🧘🏼 But those last asanas of the sequence can also be challenging and many of you have trouble coming up to the headstand, have doubts about the alignment in the shoulderstand or don’t know how to safely approach the lotus pose. So I decided to address all those issues in one workshop this Saturday 🙃 We will have a look at the alignment, technique and alternative variations to inversions and the lotus pose as well as discuss the general purpose and therapeutic qualities of those asanas 💡

Picture taken exactly 8 years ago in Petri Räisänen’s Koh Mak retreat, where we had a perfect “room” for the closing sequence 🌊🌴😍

I came to Switzerland for a fixed three months… nine years ago today 😄🇨🇭🎊 Which means I already stayed 36 times longer than planned 😅 Every time I look at this view after I’m done teaching I have no regrets 😍 Thank you Switzerland for having me! I hope my work adds some value for the local community and that I can keep contributing in the years to come 🙏

I began my stay in Switzerland with an introduction workshop for new Ashtangis and some of them are still my students today 🙃 I will start another introduction course next Thursday, I’d be happy to welcome you in our yoga tribe! 🙌
