THE EMOTIONAL FACE
Human beings live in large, complex social groups. Effective communication within these settings is essential for survival and harmonious living. Our most sophisticated form of communication is language, but we rely just as deeply on a more ancient non-verbal mode. We read faces. The human face is capable of displaying complex emotion which is immediately understandable to others, and which would often be impossible to put into words. We literally feel what the other feels. A group of cranial nerves innervate this muscular apparatus of facial expression. Collectively they are known as the Social Engagement System. This system can be disabled by trauma leaving our face expressionless and subject to misinterpretation by others.
To learn more, look out for Behind the Smile, an advanced seminar coming up in Switzerland in April 2024. It will be taught in English.
