Health Sciences Graduate Giorgia Lüthi-Corridori at the ISPRM conference in Paris

Major success for our graduate: Giorgia participated at the conference of the International Society of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine (http://www.isprm.org) in Paris (8-12 July) as the abstract of her master's thesis was accepted. Her poster presentation was based on the research findings of her thesis "Who makes use of activities and events organized by a consumer organization in the Swiss tetraplegia population?" and was very well received.

In her research project, Giorgia investigated the extent of participation in leisure time activities offered by the Swiss Paraplegic Association (SPA) in people with tetraplegia and we evaluate socio-demographic and SCI-related characteristics as correlates of participation. The findings were:

- Overall participation rate in leisure time activities was low

- Being male, recently injured, having a lower educational level and a non-traumatic injury was associated with low participation rate in holiday and cultural events offered by Swiss Paraplegic Association (SPA).

- Perceived financial hardship was positively linked to participation in tetra-weeks.

Giorgia's master's thesis was supervised by Prof. Armin Gemperli (Swiss Paraplegic Research & University of Lucerne) and Dr. Hans-Georg Koch (Swiss Paraplegic Association). Giorgia did her research internship at the Swiss Paraplegic Association in Nottwil, one of our research internship partners. For more information about our research internships please visit: https://master-healthsciences.ch/partners.html

Congratulations Giorgia!

Master in Health Sciences Graduate & PhD student wins the first 2018 SSPH+ ScienceFlashTalk Award!

We are pleased to announce that Bonaventure Ikediashi, PhD student at the University of Lucerne and supervised by SSPH+ Fellow Gisela Michel, has won the first of three events of the 2018 SSPH+ ScienceFlashTalk Award at the Geneva Health Forum (GHF) on 10 April 2018.

Bonaventure convinced the GHF audience with his 3-minute flash talk on "Does Sickle Cell Disease Knowledge deficits influence reported painful episodes in adolescents and adults with Sickle Cell Disease?" Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) is a common form of blood disorder predominantly found in Africa, India and people of African descent. People with SCD often suffer from different complications such as gall stones and painful episodes leading to frequent hospital admissions. Recent findings suggest that knowledge deficit in SCD is an important indicator of health outcomes. Bonaventure's study seeks to assess levels of knowledge deficit in parents of children, identify factors that influence knowledge and whether knowledge levels influence reported painful crises episodes.

Congratulations Bonaventure! Keep up the great work!
