Welcome to the page of the HerzClinic Luzern, providing outstanding medical care in the field of heart diseases for international patients in Lucerne, Kriens, and Hochdorf, Switzerland. English:
Our team of heart specialists with international reputation will take care of you, whether all you need is a check-up, a second opinion or a heart operation. Each cardiologist at the HeartClinic Lucerne has a special field of interest with extensive subspeciality training

We offer high-end non-invasive heart imaging techniques like Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Computed Tomography (CT), nuclear stress tests, 2D/3D echocardiography, transoesophageal echocardiography and stress-echocardiography. Of course, we only use the latest generation medical equipment available. In cases, where heart vessels may be blocked, we perform heart catheterization procedures under local anaesthesia and implant stents (which are a sort of a mesh) to unblock the vessel in the same session. Thereby, heart catheterization via the arm (radial access route) is our specialty.
5% of the population over the age of 75 years, is expected to develop a narrow heart valve (aortic valve). We are specialised in replacing this heart valve through a minimally-invasive approach via a 5-10mm cut through the groin vessel, without a big operation. This procedure is called „Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement“ – TAVR. (Please be aware, that not all patients will qualify for this procedure and some will need to undergo conventional open heart surgery for aortic stenosis!). Apart from these highly specialised procedures we offer all kinds of general cardiology examinations (like ECG, 24h blood pressure and 24h ECG monitoring, treadmill test) and treatments (e.g. Check-ups is one of our main focuses. We check your risk of developing a heart disease in the future (considering risk factors like high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes, overweight, smoking or genetic predisposition). If we find one or more of these risk factors, we will recommend strategies and therapies for you to prevent any damage to your heart in the future. In many cases, severe conditions like heart attacks may be avoided. If you are uncertain about the recommended treatment suggested by your cardiologist, you might request a second opinion from our specialist team :

1. Contact us via a secured email account to give us a first impression of what you exactly need.

2. Next, you can upload all available medical reports on a secured Swiss email account.

3. If needed, we can arrange an appointment in our clinic and make further recommendations based on your previous reports and with additional examinations in our own institution. The HeartClinic Lucerne does not only provide world class medical care, it is actually located in one of the most renowned private hospitals in Switzerland - the Hirslanden St. From the terrace of our private rooms you overlook the Lake

Lucerne and the beautiful landscape surrounding the city. This ambience will surely support your quick recovery. Please contact us for further information. Why is the corona virus also dangerous for the heart?
I, 55 years old, belong to the risk group of corona virus after having had a myocardial infarct and a stent-implantation. I’m trying to follow the recommendations, but I don’t really understand: why does the virus affect the heart?
Answer: Thank you so much for your question. It has been asked quite frequently in different forms in our practice in the last few days.
First of all, a positive note to the corona-virus (SARS-CoV-2) and to the associated disease (Covid-19): Most of the infections (over 80%) have had a moderate course with flu-like Symptoms up till now. For example: cough (55%), fever (39%), runny nose (28%), sore throat (23%), or shortage of breath (3%). The numbers are derived from the Robert Koch Institute in Germany.
Besides having distinct symptoms, around 3% to 6% of people testing positive could become seriously ill and develop a life-threatening condition of lung- or multiple organ failure.
These life-threatening conditions could happen in any age group, but the risk increases with age above 60. The death rate for people over 85 years old of age can rise up to 25% for example.
In addition to age, the cardiovascular disease counts as the most important risk factor causing an unfavorable course, especially in patients with constricted heart vessels (for example after stent-implantation or heart operations).
The risk also increases for patients who have had a cardiac infarction or a stroke, and also for patients who suffer from cardiac insufficiency, hypertension, diabetes or are excessively overweight.
Because the Covid-19 is primarily a disease of the respiratory system, smokers or people
who have conditions like asthma or COPD are also exposed to higher risk than others.
Other factors include severe organic diseases (like liver, kidneys, cancer, immune system disorders: occurring also for instance by taking cortison)
Caution! Even when the heart patient feels healthy…
Although high-risk-patients could also have milder courses of disease, but it’s a hard thing to
estimate who gets what.
Even people who feel fit and healthy should strictly stick to the recommendation of the BAG
(Federal Office of Health). Stay at home as much as possible, the hygienic measures,
minimize contact (also to one’s children and grandchildren), maintain a distance of 2 meters
except for people who live in the same household.
The questions which you are asking are not easy to answer. There is not a lot of assured
information up till today, and the processes are quite complex.
A possible clarification: SARS-CoV-2 binds to a receptor, which is available in both the lung
and the heart and vascular system. This receptor also plays a role in the immunity and
diabetes.
Furthermore it is conceivable, that the virus could directly damage the cardiac muscle cells
in terms of myocarditis, a condition which is particularly stressful for a pre-damaged heart.
The fundamental thing to mention is, patients with heart disease should not take personal
decisions to change or stop any medication prescribed by their doctors.
In case of uncertainty, please consult your general doctor or your cardiologist by phone.
They can also provide advice on flu vaccine, which is sensible at the moment, and pneumococcal vaccines, aiming to protect from pneumonia.

Short Answer:

The Covid-19 could be very dangerous for heart patients but the reasons are still not clarified enough.

Not each heart patient will develop the severe symptoms, nevertheless everyone should
adhere to the recommendations of the federal office of health. Incase of uncertainty always call your doctor!

How to survive your Christmas holidays 🎄🎁.... The cardiologist's view... 🤓

Christmas is a commonly peaceful time with the family. However, buying all the Xmas presents may be stressful and people tend to eat huge amounts of everything, that is really unhealthy. In addition, some people may spoil themselves with alcohol and ci******es or even a cigar. This is a big topic in particular on New Year´s eve. You might imagine, that Christmas may be a quite scary time for the on-call cardiologist in the hospital. - In particular, as patients do not want to stay in hospitals over the holidays. I had several cases, where patients delayed hospital admission for several days, despite severe chest pain and symptoms of a heart attack. – Not a good idea at all!
So, what should patients with a previous heart attack or with heart failure know, before starting the Christmas mania?
• Choose wild salmon for your Christmas dinner!
Fish contains omega-3-fatty-acids, which influence cholesterol levels in a positive way. Moreover, fish has less calories than meat in common and it consists of proteins. So if you stick to fish, you can eat more without gaining weight!
But be careful, avoid fat fish like carp and prefer salmon or halibut.

• If you are a bit overweight, avoid carbohydrates as much as possible!
Try to reduce sugar and white bread as much as possible! Perhaps just one or two small pieces of cake. Carbohydrates will make you gain weight and overweight is closely related to the development of diabetes in elderly people.
Many patients can even reduce their pills for diabetes control, when they achieve to reduce body weight.
Replacing white bread by whole grain bread will also improve your diet. The darker the bread the better for your body.
The older people get, loosing weight is getting more and more difficult, as elderly people do move less and burn less calories than younger people unfortunately.

• Try to keep control of your calorie intake
If you have a bit of a weight problem, there is basically only two ways of how to deal with this: Either you burn more calories by doing sports and/or you eat less calories!
So the first step to lose weight is indeed to get familiar with your food! This may sound funny, but you should ask yourself, how much you really know about your dinner tonight?
On average you will spend six years of your life just with eating! So, it might be worthwile to gain some knowledge about your nutrition:
a) There is several online tools and apps available to keep track of the calorie intake. For example https://www.caloriecount.com/, https://authoritynutrition.com/5-best-calorie-counters/
Having a good overview of your calories will help you to reduce calorie
intake following the massive Christmas dinner.
b) You should also measure your weight regularly and adjust your diet, if you gain >1kg to keep a steady weight balance.
c) You should learn more about a healthy diet and you will find out, that it is not necessarily painful to lead a healthy lifestyle.
Here I give you some tips for further reading:

• Be considerate with your alcohol intake!
One or two glasses of red wine have been proven to be beneficial for your heart. Moderate red wine consumption is an important factor of the “Mediterranian Diet”, which means the food consumed in Italy or France.

- http://patient.info/health/mediterranean-diet
If you have to take pills on a regular basis, you should avoid to consume alcohol and your pills at once! So keep some time (at least 3 better 6 hours) between your pill intake and alcohol!
• Don´t be a couch potatoe – stay active over Christmas!
If you eat more, you will also need to move more! So you should schedule a nice and long (at least 30 minutes) Christmas walk every afternoon.
If you plan skiing holidays in the mountains, please be aware that people with heart problems (like previous heart attack or with heart failure) might struggle above an altitude >1500m above sea level.
I wish you a merry and healthy Christmas!

Yours, Georg Fröhlich

Q: Doc, can I reduce the number of my pills? 💊🤔

Dr. Fröhlich gives us the answer!

Many of my patients are not so happy about the number of pills they have to take every day. On the other hand, most of the pills are prescribed by their physician in order to improve their quality of life or even prognosis.
It is also important to take into consideration, that with increasing number of daily pills, many patients might get confused and miss the one or the other pill now and then or take the wrong pills at wrong timing.
So more pills is not always beneficial.
My patient David asked me if there is no way to reduce the number of pills, he has to take every day. He is a 76 years old fellow, who suffered a heart attack 6 months ago, diabetic and a bit too much weight on his hips, but who is otherwise in a pretty good shape. He is applying Insulin and takes metformin for his diabetes, two different blood pressure pills, a cholesterol lowering drug and two blood thinners (aspirin and ticagrelor), as he received a stent when he had his heart attack earlier this year. He did unfortunately not yet manage to skip smoking so far and therefore he also suffers from a lung condition (COPD) urging him to use an inhaler to improve his breathing. Moreover, David is affected by lower back pain and he takes pain killers on a regular basis.
I advised David, that some pills may indeed be skipped over time, if he changes his lifestyle.
• Let us begin with the diabetes treatment:
Patients with type II diabetes (= onset of diabetes usually at older age) are overweight in many cases. There is indeed a close association of obesity and diabetes. This means, that if David loses weight, his diabetes might improve, so that the dose of the insulin may be reduced or Insulin might even be stopped over time.

• How about the blood pressure medication?
